Title: Geotechnical Grout & Concrete and Communication with the Concrete Ready-Mix Industry
Mr. Allen’s presentation will focus on grout and concrete prepared by ready-mix producers and how to improve communication between geotechnical community and the ready-mix industry to achieve high performance grouts, meet sustainability goals and minimize and defuse conflict problems.   Fundamentals of cementitious grouts and concretes will be introduced.  A number of site-specific case studies will be presented that cover performance of grouts and concretes for rigid inclusions, CFA piles, secant wall and drilled piers, and low embodied carbon solutions.  The case studies will focus on the questions that parties involved in the work should be asking of each other to ensure that the performance of supplied grout and concrete meets the project and construction needs.
Mr. Allen is a former Minnesota Geotechncial Society board member who specializes in materials related to geotechnical construction.  He is a licensed engineer in the state of Texas and holds a Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.  He has over 25 years of experience in the geotechnical industry and served on all three of the GeoEngineering Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) teams for the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence in New Zealand. He is currently serving as board member for the Deep Foundation Institute’s Educational Trust and has held other industry leadership positions for the International Geosynthetic Societies North American Chapter, ASTM Committees D35 on Geosynthetics and Committee D18 on Soil & Rock.  He also serves on ASCE’s and DFI Committees on Grouting.
