Title: Details of Design and Construction of the Central City Tunnel

Abstract: The Central City Parallel Tunnel is a 4,200-foot-long tunnel located 80 feet underground conveying stormwater from downtown Minneapolis to the Mississippi River. The talk will present the details of the design and construction of the tunnel and access shaft. The tunnel design required consideration of geologic conditions involving the Saint Peter Sandstone, Glenwood Shale, and Platteville Limestone. The ground conditions drove the shape of the tunnel excavations, with sections of flat back box tunnels with spans up to 30 feet and unique cathedral-shaped sandstone tunnels up to 10 feet wide. The excavation and placement of the cast-in-place concrete tunnel liner was completed in the summer of 2024 after 3-years of work.

Bio: Craig Eckdahl has worked in the underground construction for 14 years all with CNA Consulting Engineers. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota. Craig has worked on all aspects of new tunnel design and construction and tunnel rehabilitation. He enjoys all aspects of progress but especially the construction observation.

Registration is for in-person attendance only. We hope to see you there!
