Title: Decision Support for Civil Infrastructure: Risk Mitigation and Community Resilience in Natural Hazards

Speaker: Dr. Milad Roohi

Presentation Abstract:

In an era characterized by an increase in natural hazard events, it is crucial to prioritize the resilience of our infrastructure and community systems. This presentation explores the interplay between multidisciplinary data, algorithms, and computational models to assess the resilience of civil infrastructure systems, as well as the social and economic systems they support. It introduces a multi-disciplinary resilience modeling framework that models the impacts of natural hazards on interdependent infrastructure and community systems while quantifying resilience metrics for decision support and developing mitigation policies. The real-world implementation of the proposed approach for US communities demonstrates promising potential in enabling proactive and reactive measures to minimize service interruptions and optimize mitigation, response, and recovery strategies.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Milad Roohi is an Assistant Professor in the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and directs the Smart Resilient Infrastructure and Urban Systems (SiRIUS) lab. His research has been supported by federal and state agencies including NIST, NSF, NDOT. Before joining UNL, he was a Senior Scientist at Aon in the Impact Forecasting Catastrophe Modeling R&D Center of Excellence. He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the NIST Center for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning in Colorado and earned his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Vermont. His expertise includes structural engineering and mechanics, infrastructure sensing and monitoring, and risk, reliability, and resilience engineering. He is a voting member of the ASCE Structural Control and Health Monitoring and ASCE Dynamics technical committees.
