Soils 101

It is traditional in the educational system to describe the levels of complexity for any specific topic of the engineering field, giving values from 100 to 700. This presentation is oriented to all civil engineers of any discipline of practice, with the intention to refresh the basic geotechnical concepts, and more specifically, understanding soils terminology, behavior and different approaches depending of the purpose or structural requirements.

During this site tour, we are planning to discuss the soils basic concepts followed by a borrow pit tour to understand the origin of some granular soils used in engineering infrastructure.

Soils have been used by humans since the very origin but, through the last two centuries, mostly for military purposes, soil mechanics began developing with fundamentals. In the
last 80 years, geotechnical engineering has become a State of Art and the complexity has made it essential in working with all engineering disciplines to optimize resources and make developments possible and sustainable.

Soils are used in landscaping activity, excavation and filling operations, as bearing or support of structures, for roadways, as retention of water or soil masses or simply to
store water deposits for future use.

During this hour we will refresh some of the soil origin and basic concepts to be understood by an engineer when requiring Geotechnical services.

This short 101 will discuss:
  • Soils origin
  • Soils classification
  • Soil properties and parameters for engineering purposes
  • Soils stresses
  • Soils behavior
  • Soil structure interaction
  • Type of foundations and soil structures
  • Compaction and Quality Control
