We can proceed with discussions of inclusive systems as if there were not fierce opposition or we can address the opposition directly.
I prefer the latter. We can talk about how to achieve our goals by defining them in terms that don't provoke the politically-offended class? Examples: We find the best engineers by looking everywhere, not just at the same places where we always recruit. How to retain engineering talent by ensuring they remain seen, heard, and valued? How to ensure project success by involving ALL public stakeholders? How to build teams that function best? Those are easily understood and defendable goals that can be achieved by justice, equity, diversity and inclusion as pathways.

Hello! My name is Saki Urushidani and I am the current Chair of ASCE's MOSAIC (Members of Society Advancing An Inclusive Culture). I wanted to ask on here if there are any specific panel discussions or presentation topics you would like to see at ASCE2027 Convention related to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. The MOSAIC team would like to submit abstracts for consideration based on demand, so wanted to ask the question on this platform.
Would you like to see presentations about projects that considered equity and environmental justice? A panel discussion about women in civil engineering leadership? Principals of universal design? Historical infrastructure decisions and their long-term impacts? Recruitment and retention of diverse candidates? These are just a few topics but wanted to spark some ideas with some examples.
Also if you are interested in getting involved with MOSAIC, we are always accepting new members so please let me know if you would like to join us!
