If you are presenting at Structures Congress next week, please reply to this thread with your topic, date/time of <g class="gr_ gr_2008 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="2008" data-gr-id="2008">session</g>, and what attendees can expect to get out of your session.

I'm starting to consider which sessions I'll attend, and figure I'm not the only one. I can certainly read the program descriptions, so what I'd really like to know for the "what attendees should expect" part is: What about your topic/presentation is so compelling that I shouldn't miss it?

    Hi Stephanie,

You are welcome to the presentation on anchorage of headed reinforcing bars in concrete. I believe you will find it quite helpful as it will cover the new versatile design provisions for headed bars to overcome the shortcomings (inefficiency and congestion) of hooked bars and existing headed bar design provisions. The research conducted to develop the new design provisions is the largest of its kind with the tests of more than 650 full-scale specimens. Based on the findings from this research, ASTM A970 has been updated for head dimension requirements (ASTM A970-18) and the upcoming version of the ACI 318 Building Code (ACI 318-19) will incorporate the proposed design provisions.

Please visit the above link for detail.

    See you in Orlando.

    Stephanie,

My presentation, which will occur at 4:15 PM on Friday 4/26, will discuss The Adaptive Reuse of the Apex Hosiery Company Building. The presentation will describe how several fatalities, as a result of a building demolition collapse in 2013, lead to the enactment and enforcement of a Demolition Ordinance in the City of Philadelphia. As a result of the Ordinance, the Philadelphia Structural Division of Pennoni Associates, Inc. became involved with a number of demolition projects, one of which involved the partial demolition and adaptive reuse of an existing manufacturing building located in Philadelphia. The presentation will provide details on the requirements of the Demolition Ordinance, the fascinating history of the Apex Hosiery Company Building, and the interesting facets of Pennoni's involvement with pre and post demolition aspects of the project, including encountering an unusual and unique vintage reinforced concrete flat slab system that was used to construct a portion of the original building.

    All,

For those interested in professional liability and how you might get sued for negligence there are three sessions you should attend. The first is at 9:00 AM Thursday where two attorneys and a practicing engineer will present differences in professional behavior required under design-bid-build versus bidder-design. The second is at 11:00 AM Friday where a panel of attorneys, who defend structural engineers, will present stories about recent claims. The third is at 3:30 PM Friday where an actual claim, full disclosure, will be presented, un-redacted. Presenters will be the engineer and the defense attorney.

    Thanks, Stephanie.

My presentation, "Examination of the ICC Acceptance Criteria For Handrails and Guards", reviews ICC Publication AC 273 published in 2017 by the ICC Evaluation Service as a specification for the design of balcony guardrails.  The examination shows that the specification contains excessively permissive deflection limits, which may result in an exceedingly uncomfortable guardrail design.  Bayhill 29-30, on Friday, 9:30 am to 11:00 am.

I am looking forward to speaking at this conference with so many other wonderful speakers.  I will be speaking on the topic of effective communication, the full description is below.  I will be challenging participants in my session to make real change in their communication efforts immediately after my session.

I will also be there with The Civil Engineering Podcast and will be conducting some interviews.  I look forward to meeting you Stephanie.

Developing Effective Communication Skills for Engineering Professionals

If you ask anyone how to be a successful engineer or a top engineering manager, they would tell you that you would need good communication skills. However, they will rarely tell you how to develop them. In this session, you will learn practical strategies that can be used on a daily basis to incrementally improve your communication skills and subsequently your ability to communicate with others. Implementing these strategies will put you on the fast track to becoming a top engineering manager because you will be in the small percentage of engineering professionals who can communicate effectively on a regular basis.

If you follow the strategies provided in this session, this one session alone can have a massively positive impact on your engineering career and life.

In this session, you will learn how to:

    • Communicate effectively with team members,
    • Say things in a way that will help you get the responses you are seeking,
    • Listen more effectively (the key to communication),
    • Be responsive so people want to communicate with you, and
    • Apply strategies to effectively collaborate with your team members.

    Hi All,

I will present my paper, Sliding-Type Tuned Mass Dampers for Tall Buildings at 1:30PM  Thursday 25th in Celebration 3-4. You all are welcome. My paper will introduce a compact and economical TMD system whose application can be determined later even middle of the construction stage to be installed around the topping-off. You would find a very attractive supplemental damping option for tall-to-medium size buildings. This will give you a new, different views about building dampers. Hope to see you then.

    Good morning, Stephanie,

Oscar Jones and I are excited to contribute to the technical program this year in effort to best equip structural engineers to protect the safety of the public. We will share an in-depth discussion of the design and environmental factors that affect the performance of post-installed anchors and will demonstrate simple ways to mitigate those factors. Our presentation will cover code provisions, design methods, new software solutions, and installation systems that help reduce human error from design to inspection. We'll also perform a live demonstration installing various types of post-installed anchors and open the opportunity to our audience members so that engineers can get a first-hand experience with the systems they specify.

The bottom line is: We want you to get the performance on the jobsite that you design for in the office. This is a holistic view of the simple changes you can make in your selection, design, and specification process to help ensure that structural connections perform as they're intended to.

Our session will be held Thursday afternoon from 1:30pm-3:00pm. We look forward to seeing y'all there!

On Friday morning, we'll be doing an extremely fast paced presentation on what structural engineers should know about historic masonry.

We'll touch very briefly on everything from the pyramids, to the recent fire at Notre-Dame, to lighthouses, fortifications and museum houses, to proportions of modern day repair mortars, and we'll have fun the whole way through. The best part is that we have a rather solid handout, so you don't have to take notes through the whole thing. Look forward to seeing all Friday morning.

    Hi Stephanie,

    Thank you for this thread.

We are looking forward to provide attendees with a comprehensive example of how to design structures with seismic dampers from A-Z.
Let's jump to the bottom line: What about our topic/presentation is so compelling that you shouldn't miss
    The answer is: practicality!

When planning a retrofit or a new structure engineers always face challenges about building performance or code compliance. They also feel that by using additional damping it will be easier to make the structure comply with seismic demands. However, despite this correct gut feeling, they are usually confronted with a myriad of options that they either do not fully understand or that are difficult to compare.

In this presentation we put ourselves in the shoes of a structural consultant and we provide you with the tools to compare and chose a system, as well as what to look out for in actual practice. From design to building specs, the attendee will gain a good understanding of the steps involved.  They will get insights on what are the key aspects to monitor, to increase the likelihood that the structure behaves according to the assumptions in the model.

Our session will be held Thursday morning from 11:30am-12:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

    Hello Stephanie,

I will be presenting Friday morning from 9:30am - 10:30am in Celebration 7-8 as a Vendor Session.  I represent Dlubal Software which develops structural analysis and design software including our nonlinear FEA program RFEM.

During the presentation, I will be discussing time-history analysis and in particular machine induced vibrations on a steel structure.  I want to draw comparisons of a linear vs. a nonlinear analysis.  Many engineers assume a linear analysis is sufficient even when their design project may include nonlinear elements (i.e. tension-only members, support failure with uplift, etc.).  I want to show you how such simplifications and assumptions can lead to drastically different results when we compare this to a dynamic analysis that truly considers such nonlinearities.

Find more information here.  PDH credit will be available.  I hope to see you there!
