Project BUILD, a collaboration between the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning, the University of Virginia, and the American Society of Civil Engineers, aims to enhance youth engagement in STEM through community outreach. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the initiative focuses on understanding youth learning preferences and fostering interest in STEM careers through interactive programs, community dialogues, and workshops targeting students in grades 2-5 and their families. The project emphasizes the Engineering Design Process and includes hands-on activities facilitated by volunteers and local student chapters. The project has seen success in improving teamwork skills and family participation, although challenges such as volunteer readiness and material preparation were noted. The initiative has established strong communication channels among stakeholders and is set to continue through 2019, with plans for future programming already underway. Recommendations for ongoing success include proactive planning, committee involvement, and maintaining open lines of communication to ensure effective collaboration and execution of events.
