The ASCE Cleveland Section participated in the EarthFest event at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for two consecutive years, 2008 and 2009, to promote civil engineering awareness, particularly in environmental engineering and water resources. This annual event, Ohio's largest environmental education gathering, serves as a platform for educating the public about global concerns through interactive exhibits and activities. The booth aimed to engage children and encourage them to consider civil engineering as a career, featuring themes like 'Clean Water is an Engineered Product' and 'Green – Engineers Make It Work.' The preparation for the event involved coordination with ASCE nationals for materials and display setup, with a focus on volunteer engagement and interactive displays such as K’Nex bridge kits. The event was well-received, with positive feedback from attendees, including civil engineers who appreciated the outreach efforts. The experience underscored the importance of early organization and volunteer involvement, with plans for follow-up presentations to inspire future activities within the community.
