This document provides a comprehensive guide for individuals seeking to persuade their employers to fund their ASCE membership. It outlines the rationale behind the initiative, emphasizing that the costs of not having a membership can outweigh the expenses associated with it. The guide includes a structured approach, from the initial idea inspired by previous ASCE initiatives to the development of a concise elevator pitch and supporting materials for effective communication with employers. It highlights the importance of framing ASCE membership as an investment rather than a cost, aiming to foster dialogue about its value within the workplace. The project was initiated in October 2014 and culminated in a successful publication that resonated with members of the Utah Section, leading to an increase in membership renewals. While the initiative faced challenges in encouraging individuals to actively utilize the provided resources, the overall response was positive. Recommendations for future efforts include continuous updates to the materials and ongoing engagement with Section and Branch leaders to maintain momentum and support for ASCE membership advocacy.
