The New Trans-Atlantic Cable Webinar Series is a joint initiative of the Panel of Historical Engineering Works of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the History and Heritage Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the National History Committee of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.This Webinar: Pneumatic caissons were first developed for use in bridge construction in 1850 at Rochester in Kent. The method soon spread from there across the globe and this talk will explore how the method enabled far more ambitious structures but at a serious cost to the men who built them.
