ASCE’s IIJA Implementation Series: Pass the CHIPS - New Federal Funding for Research and Development

Just as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) targets many of the solutions outlined in ASCE’s 2021 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure to raise the grades, the recently enacted CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 will help restore the United States’ commitment to research and development (R&D). Known as CHIPS-plus, the bill, which ASCE strongly supported, injects tens of billions of dollars into domestic manufacturing and increases authorizations for critical science and research programs.

The bill significantly increases authorizations for the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science; creates a new Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships at NSF; and supports the creation of 10 regional technology hubs across the country. The CHIPS and Science Act represents a huge win for the science and engineering community and will strengthen the nation’s scientific research enterprise for the future.

Join leaders from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology and ASCE Government Relations on September 21st from 3:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time for “ASCE’s IIJA Implementation Series: Pass the CHIPS - New Federal Funding for Research and Development.” Attendees will be able to hear first-hand how NSF and NIST are preparing for the opportunities provided by the CHIPS and Science Act and will be able to engage in a discussion about how this significant investment in R&D will accelerate the development of new and innovative materials and processes, facilitate sustainable and resilient infrastructure, and meet future needs to ensure the best possible infrastructure for the 21st century.
