Extreme Events & Systems: How Interdependency Leads to Cascading Impacts and Systems Failure-PAID

This second webinar in a three-part series will explore the 2021 ASCE publication, “The Impacts of Future Weather and Climate Extremes on United States’ Infrastructure: Assessing and Prioritizing Adaptation Actions.” The publication, and the webinar series, explore both the vulnerability of the United States’ infrastructure to current weather and climate extremes and the fragility of these systems in the face of climate change.

This session draws from the ASCE Infrastructure Report Card categories, focusing on the five most critical, overarching infrastructure sectors: energy, transportation, drinking and wastewater, water storage and flood protection, and navigation, and exploring the ways in which these five sectors are increasingly interdependent. In design, maintenance and operation, we must consider these interdependencies in assessing vulnerability and risk. This webinar includes visualizations and examples of how impacts to one system can cause significant impacts in others, potentially leading to large-scale failures in unanticipated ways, along with simple tools for integrating more resilient approaches into engineering work.
