In 2017, Doug retired from his academic position as the Donald and Sharon Greenwood Endowed Chair and professor of Construction Engineering at Iowa State University. He now devotes his energies to his consulting practice which focuses on construction management consulting for projects delivered using alternative contracting methods. He is currently providing assistance to the Georgia DOT’s $11 billion Major Mobility Improvement Program and the Caltrans DB, CMGC, and business intelligence programs. He also developed and is currently delivering a Construction Engineering Certificate program for ASCE, provided via guided on-line learning.
He received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in Oklahoma, Texas and Oregon, a Certified Cost Engineer, a Designated Design-Build Professional and a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the UK.
Before moving to academia in 1994, he spent over twenty years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel. Doug began his mentoring efforts while in the Army and carried them into his academic career. He formalized his “mentoring program” in 2002, and began formally mentoring three young academics at a time focusing on helping them achieve promotion and tenure at their institutions. To date, he has successfully assisted nearly 15 assistant professors at universities in the US, Canada, and New Zealand achieve tenure.
