I would like to start a discussion about performance reviews. I understand that they are run differently at each company as well as at different times; however, they all serve the same overall purpose - dedicated time to sit down with your supervisor to review your performance as well as to set goals for the next year.

Does anyone have any tips on preparing for an upcoming performance review? How/when does your company schedule performance reviews? Any advice or information is appreciated!

It is easy for most of us to note and talk about areas of improvement. However, it is important to emphasis about achievements, which are very easy to miss out on. I think in this year, I am going to keep a monthly progress sheet in the format of self-appraisal so that I am more prepared for the year end performance review.

As someone who performs performance reviews for our engineering staff, I appreciate when engineers highlight their accomplishments and most importantly, come prepared with a set of realistic and achievable goals for the next year. Those goals often being a combination of professional development and general accumulation of knowledge (learn a new skill, develop interesting research goals, develop new internal tools, etc.).  We typically have our formal review process once a year but are starting to have less formal lunch meetings monthly as check-ins to continually see how an engineer's goals/aspirations are aligning with management's objectives and to see how they can best be aligned. Performance is certainly discussed as well but typically in the context of how it relates to an engineer's goals. Not 100% sure if I'm answering your question or not but I'm happy to provide more input if you have any followup! :-)

Please supplement the advice in this thread, with the thread:
