In light of CDC recommendations to avoid group gatherings, our local Savannah Branch decided to cancel any upcoming meetings. I imagine most other branches are canceling or postponing meetings as well.

While we enter a time of social distancing, how are you encouraging continued engagement within your ASCE community?

When we sent out our meeting cancellation notice, we mentioned that members can still obtain PDHs through ASCE webinars. I would love to hear more about efforts to stay connected in other Branches and Sections.

Our next Section event has been canceled, as it was to be at the University of Rhode Island, which has suspended classroom activities.  I hope that we can schedule it for April along with all of our awesome YMG events we have planned.  Fingers crossed we will be celebrating our Centennial in May!

In the meantime, I will be directing members to our Section Collaborate forum.  Members are still being introduced to the platform and I plan to send out a notification out via Constant Contact to ensure everyone is reached.

This is uncharted territory for all, so maintaining a network of colleagues outside of your firm becomes increasingly important.

As part of the Philadelphia YMF Section, we have suspended/postponed all in-person events until further notice. We have a board meeting (all -virtual of course!) scheduled for later this week to hopefully discuss ways as a board we can shift some of our programming to a virtual format and continue to provide value to our local members.

The Minnesota section has canceled events as well and the state is currently under Executive Order to stay at home through April 10.

We are now putting together an open forum virtual meeting in order to engage with our members during this time. We will be updating them on any ASCE society news, inviting the licensing board to speak about upcoming licensing renewals and answer questions, as well as reminding members of the resources available. We will be using menti.com to help facilitate discussion. We will also be inviting our neighboring Duluth, MN branch and western WI branches to try to engage a broader audience and use this opportunity to lean on/support those around us a little more.

I am really interested to know if there are any Society policies or best practices on this subject that we should share with members. Specifically, I would love to get more ideas on engaging with as well as supporting our membership during this time.

Here's an idea:  I was video chatting with an ASCE colleague yesterday and we had a somewhat spontaneous idea that could be applied to any Branch or Section. We were thinking of a webinar-based round table where local civil engineering leaders (2 or 3 private sector firm leaders and maybe a couple public sector leaders?) can make a panel and they can respond to how the COVID-19 situation is affecting their organization, what are some things they are doing to deal with it, etc. I'm thinking we could have a moderator (or perhaps more than one if moderators can be at different locations?) and a number of pre-determined questions. We could also have a chat function for attendees to ask questions. I'm wondering if National could help by setting up a template/platform for doing this, and help generate a few basic questions. I'm not sure how much of a lift this would be. But I think we should do it sooner than later. Like everyone else, with all the cancelled ASCE functions, it would be nice to have something we can do and something that is relevant to our local areas.

    Hi @Henry Haselton

That is a fantastic idea! In fact, ASCE will be hosting virtual roundtables every Thursday at 3pm EST throughout the month of April. We kickoff this series this Thursday, April 2. The topic this week will be business continuity and crisis planning. We will be joined by @Elizabeth Bialek, @Karen Kabbes, @Terry Neimeyer. You can register for the event here. I would encourage section and branch leaders to attend to see if this format might of interest to your local groups. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

Wishing all of you the best during these difficult times.

Tirza - could you please re-send the registration link? That one you sent appears to be dead.
