    Posted 03-21-2021 10:53 AM

Want to turn those job applications into job interviews?

It's all about crafting the perfect resume.

The way you present your work history isn't just important; it can be the crucial reason you get that call back for an interview.

And the ASCE Resume Workshop can help.

Please post your resume in this thread until Friday, March 26. All submitted resumes will be reviewed by coaches and receive a response by March 29 on the thread.

We are accepting resumes only - please do not post a CV. You can find information about the difference here. We also ask that you only submit in a PDF format. Please remember you potential employers may be reviewing resumes in this thread as well. Please submit your best version. This is also a networking opportunity.

Read resume tips from the ASCE Resume Coaches here.

You can find other resume related resources here.

Once you've perfected your resume, I encourage you to post it in ASCE's job board

****You must be an ASCE member to participate in the workshop.

    Hello Guglielmo,

Your resume has a lot of potential and you seem to be on the path to a really bright future. Keep up the great work academically.
    I've attached your marked-up resume.
I'd say the number one thing is to try to view your resume as if you were hiring. Hopefully, this helps!

Feel free to respond with any questions or comments,

    Charles,

I think your resume definitely has an aesthetic appeal. I really like the cleanliness of the desgin. Although really pleasant to look atm the material needs some organzation. Some of your categories were hard to follow.
Additionally, a 'normal' resume has one page but it looks like you have been in the industry for a while so 2 pages can be accpetabel. I don't think you should include the last 5 pages of slides though.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or comments.

    Mario,

Your resume has some great bones to it! I think there are two small points that need to be fixed:
    1. The descriptions of your work experience aren't really dynamic and don't give a feel for what you actually did. Try to add more specific details to impress the reader and make them want to read more. Add project size, scope, money spent, and other such examples to make your experience really shine.
    2. I'd change the order in which you laid out some of your categories. Think of what you want to person viewing your resume to look at first. Education, Programs, Experience, then skills. I put skill at the end because your work experience should show your skills.
Besides that, there are a few formatting things to tweak but overall a very strong resume.

    Good luck finishing your masters!

    Daniel,
Thanks for the pointers. I struggle with project size, scope, and money spent, the last potential employer's feedback "the projects you have worked on are too small" so they didn't hire me. I was taken aback by their feedback; I believe my skill set can be applied to larger projects and successfully complete the tasks entrusted to me, so then I removed all references to project size and money spent.
Do you have any suggestions to overcome the project size "barrier"?
    Thanks,

    Mario,

I agree with you that the experience you learnt from working on small projects is just as valuable as information you learnt from large projects. The interviewee's critique perhaps was referring to the fact that large projects have a larger scope of work and therefore come with larger budgets, longer schedules, and most importantly larger room for error. Ultimately, both small and large projects have their unique differences but there is value in each.

I would keep the information on your resume but by the interview's focus on the outcomes and learned experience you gained for each of those projects. Focus on how you can apply each of those experiences with the current role and responsibilities you are applying for.

    Best of luck,
    Daniel Bressler

    Hi Doug,

Thank you for the comments. I have a question about the Objective statement. I used to have one but I also needed the space for my experience and projects.
I was wondering what would be more critical, experience and project or the objective statement?
Also for the project section, almost all of them are academic project but one is a club project. Should I still change the name?
    Thank you for your time.

    Jose,
I would suggest keeping your Experience section, adding an objective statement, and trying to shrink the size of the Academic Project section, as the academic project section would be the least critical, in my opinion. If space is still an issue, you can edit/modify the margins to gain some space, and you can probably gain some space by decreasing the font size of your name a little bit.

I think you will have a top-notch resume after these changes.

    Thanks.

    Hi Yaman

    Thanks for submitting and anticipating.

    Your resume looks good.

I have the following comments to improve your resume:
    - Add the address where you live. The employee need where you are located, how is your commute, and if you need to relocate.
    - Add an "objective" Section if you are looking for any specific role or field in Civil Engineering.
    - Add the related courses to the specific job you are looking for. You have listed all the courses you have had in school. Add your project under the Education section since all is School Project.
    - In "work and academic experience" add any internship and engineering experience you have had. nothing is listed. If you have not had any, change the title to Academic Experience.
    - Re-arrange your resume. Move the academic after your education.
    - I would remove all the lines between the section to look cleaner and adjust the spacing to not look all congested.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,
    Siamak

    Poorna,

Thanks for submitting your resume and anticipating it.

It is recommended to not use the automatic resume builder as well as having the picture on the resume.
Please see the following comments and hopefully, they help:

    - Change the format. and add these sections:
    • Your info: Name, the address where you live, phone number, email address and the linked In
    •  Objective if you are looking for any specific job or field in civil
    • Work Experience (The company name, your title, and date you worked in that position)
    • Certification and licenses
    • Membership
    • Educations (if you have any related project or courses add in this section)
    • Honor
    • Technical Skills and languages

You don't need to mention what your interest or hobby is. That might come up later during the interview.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Siamak

    Hi Nicholas,

Your resume looks good and don't need much revision on it.
    I would just
    - Add the address where you live and your phone number,
    - Add an "objective" section in case you are looking for any specific job. You can write in that section to draw the reader's attention
    - Re-arrange the resume:
        -   Objective
        - Professional Experience
        - Education
        - Certifications and licenses including EIT (it shows you are on your path to get PE)
        - Skills
        - Affiliations

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Alberto,

Thanks for anticipating in Resume Workshop.
I have reviewed your resume. I have a few suggestions on your resume:
    - Don't use any template or auto resume builder website.
    - Arrange your resume in the way to see section by section in one column.
    -I would add
           - Your info
-Objective: A  couple of lines to show what you are looking for and what you are interested in.
           - If you have Professional experience or internship add it after Objective
           -Education
           - Academic Experience and Project: If you have any experience related to the major during school add it after the Education section
           - Certificates and Lisences
-Honor and Awards: If there are any honors and awards,
           - Skills and Languages

In your resume, you have a section "Special Project" and a section "Work Experience". if the special projects are related to school and during school, time add them after the Education section. In the Work Experience section, if it was an internship, it should be mentioned on the resume otherwise it gives a feeling you change your job within a month of hiring.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Hi Kevin,

Overall your resume already looks very good. The structure is easy to follow, and your accomplishments are stated clearly. The main suggestion I have is to break your accomplishments into bullet points. This will allow them to pop out at the reader more readily and showcase what you have done, and in general will make your resume more attractive.

I've added some comments in the attachment on additional ways to streamline your resume by removing a few words here and there. If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Best of luck,

    Hi Nicole,

Your resume is very neatly formatted and showcases a lot of good experiences. With a few tweaks it will be in top shape.

Your resume should be kept to one page. Based on its current layout, this will be easily achievable by removing less relevant information. I've added some comments in the attachment on what I suggest you remove, as well as additional ways to make your accomplishments sound stronger by rearranging a bit. If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Best of luck,

    Hi Brigid,

Your resume is laid out clearly and describes your experiences well. My suggestions mostly regard minor formatting fixes and a couple of areas where it could use more information. You have enough space in the file to expand a bit and show off your accomplishments and knowledge more.

I've added these comments in the attachment. If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Hi Pooyan,

I see that this is titled "Curriculum vitae" or CV, but I will review this as a resume since this is a Resume workshop.

Some ways you can improve this resume are the following:

    • To save space, I would recommend including your telephone number and email on the same line and then left-align one and right-align the other. Here is a resource where you can learn more about alignments if you use Microsoft Word: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/a-quick-way-to-apply-both-left-and-right-alignment-without-using-a-table/
    • For LinkedIn, I recommend changing your URL to just your name if it is available. You can do this by following the instructions on the following page: https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/87/customize-your-public-profile-url?lang=en
    • I would recommend changing the "checkmarks" to bullet points.
    • For your Computer Skills, I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. AutoCAD 2018)
    • For Relevant Experience, I would love to see more quantitative information! Like for Teacher Assistant for Solid of Mechanics! How many students did you teach? How many hours weekly did you teach?
    • For having the second page, good job in adding a header with your name! Good practice in case an employer prints out your resume one-sided and the two pages get separated.

Good job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Parul,

Your resume was already in very good shape, well organized, and easy to navigate!

Some very minor things you could do to improve it further:

    • Similar to Codes, for your Software, I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. AutoCAD 2018)
    • While not wrong, I think you can remove all the periods "." thoughout since these aren't full sentences.
    • For Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (In Progress) – great work on working on this while in school! If you have scheduled a date to take the exam, I would recommend changing "In Progress" to "July 2021 Exam Date"
    • "January –  March 2020" does not seem to be aligned with the rest of the dates on this resume.
    • For both Experience and Academic projects, I would love to see more quantitative information! Like changing "Detailed, designed, and analysed structural engineering work for steel and concrete structures using Bluebeam, Tedds and SAP2000. Façade calculations for tall buildings."  To "Detailed, designed, and analyzed structural engineering work for 10 steel and 15 concrete structures using Bluebeam, Tedds and SAP2000. Façade calculations for tall buildings ranging from 40 stories to 120 stories.

Excellent job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Derryn ,

Overall great resume and love seeing the custom LinkedIn URL! Here are some suggestions on how you can improve:

    • I more often see a one-page resume, but if you choose to go the two-page resume route, I would highly recommend that you add a header to the second page with your full name.
    • The top section that starts with "Proven success", I would suggest that you change this to an objective statement. This should be one or two sentences explaining why you are submitting your resume.
    • I see it mentioned that you are pursuing your EIT – Are you also in a preparation course like you are for the PMP?
    • Under your Professional Experience, I love the budget listed! To enhance this section I would to see more quantitative information throughout the bullet points listed here to get a better understanding of the scope of your work in these projects.
    • Under Education I see you list a post-graduate certificate for 2021. Are you currently pursuing this or have you completed it? I would recommend adding "Estimated Completion Date".
    • While this template is visually appealing, I do wonder if this is ATS friendly as many large companies use ATS scans. I also think without the template that this may fit one page!

Good job, and I hope this helps!

I'm currently waiting for my EIT application to be accepted, so that should only be a few days away before I can add EIT onto the end of my name.

I'll have a go at using one of the resume templates from ASCE to re-structure mine, and I'll be sure to incorporate the rest of your feedback too.

    Hi Iraseth!

Your resume is very good, and I really like the traditional format you used. I found it very easy to read and feel like I have a sense of "what story you want to tell" about yourself with respect to applying for jobs.

My comments are very minimal, and are included in the PDF. I'll copy them below, just in case they are visible.

    - i suggested trimming a few words out of your Objective Statement for brevity, and editing it when you apply to certain jobs to tailor it exactly to the position you are going after. If a company does both construction management and design, feel free to leave both, but if they are only focused on one or the other, edit it accordingly.

-I would consider moving Education to the bottom, and keeping the order of everything else the same. This way, it will go from Experience to Skills to other Activities and finally to your degree. The things you can do matter more than the degree you are getting.

    - another small suggestion - move your engineering software to the front of the list. and just say "Microsoft office suite" to summarize some more of the common programs.

    - one last thing - remove the blank page below before sending to employers. You did a good job keeping your work on one page, so no need to send a blank second one, especially if there are any companies that prioritize single-page resumes via a program or algorithm.

Good job, and I hope some of these prove to be helpful to you!

A lot of my comments are focused on what I believe employers in the USA look for, so feel free to accept or ignore those suggestions if you are looking for employment in other countries.

I also got a few second opinions on your resume from my boss, who is also from India. Most of my suggestions are focused on moving your work section higher on your resume, and re-naming your "Achievements" section to "Academic Achievements". It sounds like you did very very well on your exams, but I didn't understand it until my boss explained it to me. So, one of my other bigger comments on your resume is to quantitatively explain the results of your test scores to better show how well you did to people who may not understand how testing in India works.

I hope you find some of these comments, and those within the PDF file, to be helpful!

    Hi Suhail,

I am not sure what you mean by academic purposes. If you are asking about using your resume to apply to graduate schools, each school will have different requirements for what kind of information they are looking for. I would suggest checking with each school to determine what you will need for them.

I hope this answers your question, but if I did not understand you correctly, just let me know.

    Hi Keying!

You have a lot of great content and seem to already have some good experiences in the professional world. I also find the format of your resume to be very clean and easy to read.

The comments I made on your resume are pretty small. Some were grammar edits, and some were the order of which headings come before others.

I'll paste them below as well.

    - Consider a "resume summary" one line statement about yourself at the top of your resume, just above your first statement.
Some people use this as their "objective" statement. But some people don't like the idea of "objective" so they replace it with a single sentence explaining briefly who you are in terms of how you would fit the role you are applying for. For example "Civil Engineering recent graduate interested in supporting (insert key role for the company you are applying to here)
Section 5 here might give you an idea, if you want to try adding this line
    https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/resumes-cover-letters/engineering-resume-objective#:~:text=Your%20career%20objective%20is%20one,it's%20well%2Dexecuted%20and%20meaningful.

-another small comment if you run low on space would be to move your GPA to the line above with "Bachelor of Science degree, Civil Engineering"

    - Consider moving the "Education" section to the bottom of your resume. Personally, I think most employers are more interested in your work experience first. I like the order you have for everything else. Experience, Projects, Activities, Skills makes sense. If you wanted, you could also switch places the of Activities and Skills sections to keep all professional work related topics together, but its a minor change either way.

I hope you find these suggestions helpful!

    Hi Chidiebere,

Your resume has a pretty clean format to it. I think there are a few things we can do to make it a little bit shorter without sacrificing any of your content either.
My comments are attached within the PDF I am sending back, but I will also paste them here.

    - I like that you have a brief statement about yourself here. I think it could still read a little bit smoother though. Consider having another person read through this and see if they understand your meaning. I would also try to tailor this section specifically to whatever new position you are applying for. For example, you could start it with something like "Project Engineer with X years of supervisor experience in the construction sector, with a focus on roadways and bridges."

    - Consider grouping some of these projects together where similar/identical work was performed. Perhaps explain somewhere what your major duties were as a Project Engineer and as a Structural Engineer. Did you perform design work? Project management? Feel free to group all of these projects into fewer bullets and specify a little bit more about your responsibilities on each of them. Personally, I do not mind looking at resumes with more than 1 page, but there are some people who do, so the more brief you can be to communicate the work you have done, the better.

    - Under "Education", I would only list any duplicate classes you took at different schools once. This will shorten your resume, and not cause you to lose any information from it. Consider just giving one line to each school, and then courses as one more line beneath the final school.

    - I'm not really sure what "technical skills" or "office suites" mean. Is there another way to explain these two? Can you elaborate on them somehow, like if they relate to specific software or analytical skills?

I hope some of these comments are useful to you!

    - Chris

Good afternoon. Below are my comments regarding your resume:

    1. Don't duplicate information. For example, if you are going to list your software skills in the list on the left, they do not need to be included under "areas of expertise"
    2. Instead of having the section "Areas of Expertise," consider just mentioning those items in your work experience for your previous jobs.
    3. Under your name is says "MS Structural Engineering" but the education section indicates you have not graduated. Either remove that title from the top for now or add the date you graduated with your MS.
    4. Where you have your "Professional Profile" I would suggest switching it to "Objective" with a description of the exact position you are seeking, This description can/should be edited to fit a specific company opening when applying directly with a company.
    5. If your GPA was good, consider adding it to your education section.
    6. Consider removing the Professional Training section to save space unless you think it is directly applicable to the position you are seeking. If you keep it, check the spelling on the last bullet point. Did you mean "hands-on"?
    7. Be mindful of where you use capital letters. For example, your first bullet point under job experience has some items capitalized and others lower case. Be consistent.
    8. Reduce your work experience descriptions down enough to also fit the Report Writing Section onto the same page or remove the Report Writing section. Ideally your resume is a single page when printed when you are early in your career (not counting the references)
    9. On your references, if you are applying for any positions in a different country than M. Mehmood Masood, be sure to include the country code for the phone number or list the country of the phone number.

Overall it looks like you've had some good industry experience. Just make sure you don't repeat information or list so many things that it is overwhelming.

Thank you for submitting your resume. Below are my comments for your consideration
    1. Under "Profile" consider adding a sentence about what kind of position you are seeking. For example, "Seeking a full-time entry-level civil engineering position in water resources." This can/should be tailored for the position to which you are applying at each company.
    2. Eliminate the "s" at the end of the verbs under your current job. For example, "Ensure" instead of "Ensures" and "Create" instead of "Creates"
    3. Consider removing "Skillful" after each of the items in the "Skills" section since the heading indicates that you are skillful at each of those.
    4. I would add an "s" to the "Certificate" section to make it say "Certificates" since you have more than one.
    5. I would recommend moving the space from below the headings "Employment History" and "Education History" to above the headings. I think this would visually make it look like it goes with the text below the heading instead of the text above the heading.

Overall, I think your format allows for someone to find the information they are seeking. Good work

Good afternoon. Below are my comments on your resume

    1. Normally I would use the term "Volunteer Experience" instead of "Voluntary Experience," but what you have may be more common there. I suggest checking with someone to see which would be more common where you will be applying for positions.
    2. Under the Recruiting Officer description I would make the "c" on "Concept" lower case.
    3. I would recommend deleting the spaces between the 3 positions you've held for ASCE so that the final bullet point for the Secretary position fits on the first page. Because the descriptions for each position are in bullet points, it should still be legible if there isn't a space between the bullet points and the next position.
    4. My final suggestion would be to add the line "References available upon request" at the bottom of the second page.

Overall I like how you have organized the information because it makes it easy to quickly find things at a glance. I also like that you provide clickable links for when you submit a resume electronically. Good work!

    Hi Doug,

Thank you for your comments! I don't have any internship experience so I'm not confident in my professional experiences section. My only professional experience that's slightly related with civil engineering would be my research project. Would it be more beneficial to move the research project to the top of professional experiences even though my audiovisual technician position is more recent?

I look forward to hearing back from you and I appreciate your time!

    Michelle,
My suggestion would be to combine your academic project and professional experience sections together, rename it something like "Academic Project and Professional Experience", and list your entries in chronological order, starting with the most recent.

I think that will improve your resume for right now. But in the future, as you gain more professional experience, I would separate these sections, as your professional experience will become more important for your resume.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks.

    Mohsen,
I have reviewed your resume, and you have a very professional resume, which highlights your work and research experience. I really like that you have an objective statement, and that you had a footer with your name and page number on the bottom of each page. Good work on those.

The big question I have is what type of civil engineering work are you looking for? After reviewing your resume, I could see that you have a lot of academic and research expertise, and that you are currently working at an engineering firm. So are you more interested in research/academics/teaching? Or are you more interested in applying your knowledge and gaining real-world experience with an engineering firm or agency? I think this is where your objective statement can really help clarify what you want out of your career.

If you want to continue with academics/research/teaching, I would suggest converting your resume into a CV and adding your published works and going into more detail on your research.

However, if you want to gain more experience in the industry through an engineering firm or agency, I would suggest removing or shrinking some of the academic coursework entries to highlight the research and work that is most applicable to an engineering firm or agency.

I have made some suggestions on how to improve your resume in its current state, but I would need some more insight from you to further improve on your resume.

Let me know if you have any questions, or want to engage further.

    Thanks.

Luck of the draw, I get to review your resume again! I see that you made revisions to your resume since the last time I reviewed it last year. Great job!

I saw that you has posed some questions on your resume. I responded to each with my opinions. Outside of a few line spacing edits (hopefully you can see those with Track Changes) I didn't have much to add, which is a good thing. Your resume is really coming together!

    Suman,

I reviewed your resume. You have a good and well-organized resume. I suggest just modify some of the sections to improve the resume.

I would add an Objective section. You can talk about your dedication and strength and what you are looking for.
You have Both academic and professional experience. I would separate those. Move your education, academic experience, and relevant projects one after the other.

Please see attached comments and let me know if you have any questions.

    You have the well-organized resume.
To improve it, I just suggest adding an Objective section. you can talk about your dedication and strength and what you are looking for. The statement could change each time based on the position you are applying for.

    Hello,
I am super excited to submit my resume for review and any tips will be greatly appreciated. I am a senior civil engineering student graduating this May. I am currently not looking for any employment as I am continuing for my masters in structural this coming year following my graduation. I am still always looking for ways to improve my resume. Thank you so much for this thread! I am apart of our ASCE student chapter at our school and have shared this opportunity with our general body members.

    Hi Grace,

Your resume is well organized and contains a lot of relevant information. You use some great verbs to show your accomplishments. I have attached some comments, mostly minor tweaks. The most substantial edit I recommend involves providing more information about projects you've worked on, if you are allowed to disclose it. You do not have to delve deep into any project, but rather seek to more clearly convey the general type of projects you've worked on at your co-op.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Best of luck,
    Katie

    Hi Tyler,

You have a very well-organized, attractive resume with lots of great detail. It is clear you put good work into writing it.

I generally suggest early- to mid-career professionals continue to keep their resumes to one page or at least have a one-page version ready to go if needed. That being said, this is not a hard and fast rule and perhaps in academia it is more common to have a two-page resume. At any rate, most of my comments in the attachment have to do with strategically trimming down, and that strategy depends on what you are applying for.
    • Research-only position? Highlight your research, probably remove some teaching experience.
    • Teaching position? Provide more details about the classes you taught.
    • Industry or government position? Probably don't need to list all your publications.
If you choose to keep your resume at two pages, most of those comments can be disregarded as the information is well written and well presented. There are just a few comments, e.g. about punctuation and TA class details, that would still apply in a two-page resume.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

Best of luck, and let's go Hokies!

    Hi Najamussahar,

You have a great start here and a lot of good information. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with typical formats for resumes in India, so I've reviewed your resume under the assumption that you will be applying to positions in the U.S. and made recommendations based on U.S. resume norms.

I suggest early- to mid-career professionals keep their resume to one page, or two at the very most with a one-page version on hand. (A curriculum vitae is different and may go on for many pages.) I think this is very achievable for you if you reduce white space between lines and consolidate information. I've made some comments in the attachment suggesting things you can move around, remove, or expand on. The end goal is getting your resume onto one succinct, compelling page that showcases your accomplishments.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Best of luck,
    Katie

    Hi Wilson,

You clearly have put a lot of work into your resume. It is attractively formatted and contains strong verbs and useful specifics about your experiences, and I do not think it needs any major edits. I have left a couple of minor formatting comments in the attachment. If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

Thank you for the comments, I greatly appreciate it. I will make your suggested changes. I completely did not realize that I should put the actual LinkedIn link when I go into an interview. I have been constantly applying to internship positions that it completely slipped my mind. That was an amazing catch. Again, thank you so much. Have a great week and stay safe!

Hi! My name is Klemmer Nicodemus and I am a freshman at the University of Louisville! I will be applying for Co-Op positions in Fall/Winter of 2021 and hopefully working a job during the Spring Term of 2022! I am majoring in Chemical Engineering, but I am an active member of ASCE because my aspirations are to work in Environmental Engineering - hopefully involved with environmental remediation - and ASCE lends itself very well to that! My biggest concern with my resume is that I don't have anything that will attract employers when I apply in the fall - how do I make myself stand out when I don't have that much real engineering experience yet? Landing a good Co-Op and working hard for whatever organization I end up with next spring will boost my resume, which will then help me land an even better Co-Op next time around and such progress would hopefully continue through my years/career, but how do I get started and make myself a clear asset to a company now - with little experience.
Thanks to everyone involved with this workshop! This is such a valuable opportunity and I am very appreciative of the chance to prepare for my career as much as possible! All the best - Klemmer T. Nicodemus

    Klemmer,
See attached for comments. For your resume I would recommend eliminating half of what you listed so that you create space to go in-depth on what you learned or skills you gained/used in a particular position or experience. Nobody is expecting you to have engineering experience this early in the game; however, I would love to know what soft skills you have gained, what have you organized, what have you led or worked together as a team doing, etc. Sure you might not have engineering experience YET but you can stand out by showing the type of life experience you've gained through everythign you are involved with.

Thanks Tirza! I would love some feedback on my resume. I am currently applying at public agencies after only working at private consulting firms previously so I am especially interested in any specific feedback related to making the switch from private to public.
    Thanks!

    Kelly,
please see attached for comments. Your biggest need is to sell yourself more. What unique skills have you gained throughout your ten years can you put on your resume? We want you to outshine the competition, which I think is completely doable with your experience, but your current descriptions are not doing that right now. Good luck!

Hi Joe! I'm terribly sorry for the delay in responding to you. I could have sworn my comment posted on Saturday.

Anyway, I believe that your resume already looks really good. Your format is clean and your descriptions of your responsibilities give a succinct overview of your work history.    To be honest, you and I have about the same amount of time in industry, and I am usually more used to reviewing resumes from new graduates. But I hope the few comments I felt comfortable providing are useful to you. They are attached in the resume I am sending back, and copied below as well.

    - I like your "Prologue" section here. I believe one sentence could be slightly improved to give a review a little more context.
    Some ideas:
"Throughout my career, I have used that passion to help improve and implement systems in the fields of construction and (insert if needed)".
    or
"Throughout my career I have used that passion to help improve
and implement structural systems within the built environment."

    - small comment - I think "in" instead of "of" fits better here. ( last bullet of Keville Enterprises)

    Great job!

    Hi Aleksandra.

Your resume is already in very good shape. I work in water resources/environmental engineering and found it very easy to read, and very well formatted. All of my comments for you are very small, and for the most part, would consider completely optional.

Great job! Please find your resume reviewed and attached with comments which I will also paste below.

-if you wanted to keep your contact info to one line, you could probably get rid of "http://www." since most people know how to search for someone on LinkedIn. However this certainly isn't a big deal.

-I think this summary is absolutely great. This is not a recommendation to change it at all, but just another way to think about how you want to present yourself.
"Committed Environmental Engineering graduate student with a background in Mechanical Engineering"
This presents your Environmental degree first. If your mechanical background had any focus on an environmental emphasis, you could add more, such as the following:
"Committed Environmental Engineering graduate student with a background in Mechanical Engineering and an emphasis on development of green technologies" (this is just an example).

    - SWMM, not SWIMM (I work with it all the time so it caught my eye)

    - This is another personal preference. Consider moving your education below Work History. I would still leave it above Conferences. It just helps to separate all work topics from all academic topics. Again, its up to you though.

    - small comment - I don't think you need spaces between the dash (-) and the words on each side. If you have a reason for it that I am not aware, by all means keep it the way it is.

I hope these comments provided some new perspective on what is already a very strong resume.

    Hi Alex,

Your resume is very good. It is well formatted and full of quality content that is well-described. I made some comments within the PDF attached, and will also paste them below.

    - This is a pretty good Objective. Consider changing the final part of the last sentence to something about you, instead of the view points of others you have worked with. something like, "giving me an understanding of how to work on a range of projects in a variety of environments"

    - My personal preference is to see these sections in the following order:
    Objective
    Engineering Technical Work
    Skills and Strengths
    Campus and Community Involvement
    Education
    Recognitions

I just believe that your work is more important than your schooling, especially since you have some-real world experiences worth sharing.

    - minor grammar comments -
use "such as" instead of "like"
I could be wrong, but I think "station development projects" sounds better than "stations development projects" (just delete the s on stations)
some bullets end with periods for punctuation, some do not. just pick one or the other. most resumes I review seem to not use them, for what its worth.

    - Just double checking that this title isn't supposed to be "Engineers WITHOUT Borders". If its correct already, its rather amusing.

    - Consider putting "Structures Impossible" in italics

I hope some of these comments are helpful. Good luck!

    Hi Alysha,

Your resume was already in very good shape, and I found it easy to read. I made a few suggestions in the PDF attached, and will also paste them below.

    - I would consider re-ordering the headers of your resume to the following order:
    Objective
    Experience
    Skills
    Education
    Community Involvement

    - You may wish to specific if this is a BS or MS degree.

    - Looks like you ordered these alphabetically. Is "Chemistry/Biology/Physics/Geology and Materials Science and Engineering lab experiments and techniques" part of one of the programs? If not, it seems kind of wedged in between the software in the top line and the software in the bottom line. An easy suggestion might be to just use a dash bullet point like you did elsewhere to signify where your list of software begins, and then start another dash to indicate the next line for "Chemistry/Biology/Physics/Geology and Materials Science and Engineering lab experiments and techniques". I also don't think this line is entirely necessary unless you are applying to somewhere with heavy lab work, so you could choose to remove it in general.

-This NASA line seems like a cool project. Were there any aspects of it that you might be able to talk more about in order to tie it back more to the water resources engineering field? Or even general engineering topics like project management, design, database construction, programming, etc. Just finding a way to add some of those keywords in there could make the section feel more relevant to what you're currently looking for. If you can't though, it is certainly not bad in its current form.

I hope you find some of these comments useful. Feel free to accept or disregard any suggestions. Good luck!

    Hi Shayan,

Great content overall and your objective is both clear and concise.

Here are a few suggestions on ways to further improve:

    • I notice that your file is named "Resume". In the future, I would recommend including part or your full name in the filename. It helps hiring folks to find yours easily on their computer (or in my case from the rest of the resumes I am reviewing on my desktop).
    • In Relevant Coursework, I would recommend capitalizing "concrete" to be consistent with the rest of the courses listed.
    • Great work on the quantitative information throughout the professional experience as I was able to get a good understanding of your experiences!
    • For your technical software, I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. SAP2000 2019)

Great job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Hamed,

Great content overall and nice to virtually meet a fellow ASCE Member in Central PA!

Here are a few suggestions on ways to further improve:

    • You may have removed it for submission for the workshop, but in case not, I want to recommend that you remove "Cell" if you are not providing that number on your resume.
    • Totally a personal preference, but you don't need the parenthesis around all your dates I.E. changing from   (Jan. 2015 – Dec. 2019) to Jan. 2015 – Dec. 2019.
    • For your applicable Skills I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. Mathcad 2015)
    • For your professional and academic experience, I would love to see more quantitative information! I do love seeing codes references, but including the scale of the building structures (like 40 stories or estimated construction cost) can help a reviewer better understand the scope of your experience.  Also wanted to say great job including the other disciplines you have worked with like mechanical and application.
    • For the role "Teaching and Research Assistant" specifically, great job include the number of students! Because this role has some bullet points on the first pages and one on the second page, I would recommend bringing this entire experience down to the second page.
    • With two pages, I recommend a header on the second page with your name (just in case someone prints it out one sided and the two pages get separated).

Great job, and I hope this helps!

Also congratulations on passing the FE Civil Exam! That is a huge and awesome accomplishment!

    Hi Nader,

    Great content overall!

Here are a few suggestions on ways to further improve:

    • If you are planning to apply anywhere that uses ATS, I don't reccomend using any template or auto resume builder website as it may not be able to read all of the content on here.
    • For your "Objective" statement, I would recommend taking that last sentence and making a new header at the bottom of "Volunteer Experience" or something similar since you do have some room!
    • I see that you listed "Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.-USA)" I would recommend adding your certificate like this (ETXXXXX, no exp.)
    • For the People Skills you mentioned like "Team Leader", I would much rather you show me this through your work history and volunteer experience.
    • For your Computer Skills, I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. AutoCAD 2018)
    • For Work History, I would love to see more quantitative information! Can you add a range of the design or construction budget so that folks can get a better idea of the scale of your project experience?

Great job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Alex,

    Good content overall!

Here are a few suggestions on ways to further improve:

    • I would recommend keeping your roles left align and right align your dates for each of these roles to balance your resume a bit. Here is a resource where you can learn more about alignments if you use Microsoft Word: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/a-quick-way-to-apply-both-left-and-right-alignment-without-using-a-table/
    • Can you write out what "AS-ENG" means? I believe this is an Associate degree, but  I would write it out since you have the room in that line.
    • For Relevant Coursework, I would revise so that all words are capitalized to be consistent
    • For work and various experience, I would love to see more quantitative information! For example for your tutoring role, how many students do you see in a week? If you facilitate group tutoring, how many students is the maximum you have tutored at one time? For the BRIDGE sessions, how many students are in each session?
    • For consistency, I would also use bullet points for the various experience section as you did with the work experience section.
    • Is AIMS and AIMS^2 the same program? Also for AIMS Participant, since this is still present work, I would recommend having this at the top of your various experience list.
    • For your Computer Skills, I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. AutoCAD 2018)

Great job, and I hope this helps!

Good afternoon, and thank you for your participation. Below are my recommendations for your consideration:

    1. Add a comma between Houston and TX at the top.
    2. Capitalize "Seeking" in your Summary section.
    3. I would suggest being more specific in your seeking sentence. For example, "Seeking a full-time entry-level civil engineering position in wastewater." This can/should be edited based on what specific job you are applying for at a specific company.
    4.  If your GPAs were high, consider adding them to the education section.
    5. Under your Internship experience, make "Perform" past tense (Performed) to match the other 2 items listed.
    6. I would recommend changing "Activities" to say "Professional Societies" if you are just listing ASCE and SEI.
    7. Consider adding a line at the bottom that says "References available upon request"
Overall I like how clean your resume looks. I also think the clickable links are a good idea for when you electronically submit your resume.

Thank you for your participation. Below are my recommendations for your consideration

    1. Consider increasing the font size a little to make it easier to read. Just make sure you don't increase it so much that it adds another page to your resume.
    2. If you have the opportunity, consider taking the FE exam so you can apply for an EI or EIT certification in the state where you are working. If you receive the certification, add it to your resume with the date and certification number. This can show initiative to someday get certified as a PE.
    3. For consistency, at the top of the second page combine the Project Leader and Laboratory Assistant positions under one Texas A&M heading like you did for University of North Carolina on the first page.
    4. Consider adding a line on the second page after your other information that says "References Available Upon Request"
Overall, I think the format you have chosen is clear and easy to follow. Good work

Good afternoon, and thanks for submitting your resume. Below are my recommendations for your consideration

    1. Consider tailoring your intro statement to be more specific when you apply for a job. For example, "Seeking a full-time entry-level civil engineering position in steel design."
    2. Visually, I would recommend changing the job titles and companies from upper case to lower case. Same for the other items that are all caps but not bold. I would only leave the bolded items in all caps.
    3. Instead of "taking orders" say "take orders" to match the format of the other items listed for your Assistant Manager position.
    4. Since your experience is not directly related to civil engineering, I would move your education up to be the first section.
    5. Consider removing the Uniform and Williams Complaint section from your Volunteer experience section. This is something that can be brought up in an interview if relevant, but I would not include it in the resume since it is from 10 years ago and not related to engineering.
    6. Under education it says your degree is anticipated in December 2020. Either update it to show your graduation date and final GPA or update the anticipated date if you haven't graduated yet.
    7. I would move the dates of your education to be under the items instead of above them for clarity.
    8. I would combine both of the May 2017 items since they are from the same college at the same time and have the same information listed under them.
    9. For the AA General Studies in Natural Science, don't list that you were on the Dean's list in 2017 since this item is for 2016.
    10. Consider adding a line at the bottom of the page that says "References available upon request"

Overall I think most of the information you need is there, and some adjustments to formatting will make it easier for a recruiter to read efficiently. Buen trabajo.

Thank you for submitting your resume for review. Below are my recommendations for your consideration.

    1. Go ahead and insert your current GPA instead of leaving the dashes before you send your resume to companies.
    2. Since you don't have much room, these two items are optional based on what you can fit: Add an objective statement to the top that is tailored to the position you are seeking. For example. "Seeking full-time entry-level civil engineering position in transportation engineering." Add a line at the bottom of the page stating "References available upon request."
    3. You are obviously welcome to include the $ amounts on the awards/honors section, but don't feel like you have to have them on there.
Great use of color to make the resume easy to navigate. I think you chose a great format for legibility. Great work!

    Hello Tirza and ASCE staff!

I am Mexican but I am looking for a job in the US (as a Mexican I am able to legally work there without sponsorship, through a TN visa - I also added this option on my resume including a link for further information). I am currently studying to pass the FE exam and then the PE exam to finally get a license. However, I will need to improve my resume to catch potential job offers and mainly gain experience in the US.

Thanks in advance for this amazing opportunity, I would highly appreciate getting some feedback on my Resume and it would be really helpful.
