COVID-19 has drastically impacted our current work environment. Employees have switched to virtual platforms to facilitate meetings and communicate from their homes.

Many of us are still learning new platforms. I would like to introduce @Anthony Fasano, @Joe Natale, @Nicolai Oliden, and @Jennifer Sloan Ziegler. They will be sharing their expertise on using Zoom in this discussion thread. Please "Ask them Anything" in this thread and they will answer your questions on how to use Zoom effectively.

This thread will be open through Friday, June 19. Experts will share their feedback on the thread until Sunday, June 21. Please contact me if you have any questions about participating in the workshop.

    Hi Tirza

Thank you for opening this important topic for ASCE community.
I guess my question would be:

Can you take control of someone's computer/presentation on the Zoom. I am talking about a control that applications such as Remote Desktop or TeamViewer give to their users on one-on-one communications. I am asking because we use Zoom in our group meetings and sometimes it is annoying to stop and restart sharing when we want to switch to another person.

    Thank you!

Hi Arman, thanks for your question!

Yes, this functionality exists within Zoom. While another person is sharing their screen, you should see a green bar ("you are viewing X's screen") with a "View Options" tab next to it. Clicking that tab, you should see a "Request  Remote Control" Option.

This opens a dialog between the two computers, which when complete, will allow you to control the other user's screen of the tab in question.

Some things to note about this functionality:

    - It isn't quite as responsive as more dedicated control software
    - The user's accessibility permissions may cause issues and need to be adjusted
    - The Zoom host needs to have the request control option enabled

    Hello,

My question for all of you is what is your favorite feature of Zoom that most people don't typically utilize?

    Hi Dani,

Professionally, my favorite feature is the polling. If you have time to plan out your questions, it's pretty great way to keep folks engaged and prevent the Zoom fatigue from creeping in.

Personally, while lots of people have discovered fun virtual backgrounds, you can actually set the background to be a video file. It's definitely distracting, but for more casual meetings/calls, it's fun to see what people come up with.

Fortunately we have more student members here that they usually use a huge amount professional and experience engineer knowledge.

Zoom workshop is another easy way during Covid-19 pandemic to share our knowledge and experience with each other.

    Thank you all

    Hey Dani,

Like Joe, I enjoy the polling feature.  It's great to monitor participation during webinars for professional development hours - plus it keeps people engaged!

I also like the audio transcription function.  I've found it's very useful post-meeting when you want to verify what was said.  Unfortunately, you have to record to the cloud and the host has to check "Audio transcript" in the Cloud Recording window for it to happen - something most people forget to do before hand!

    Danielle - how are you?

I like the ability to share my screen and get really specific on what application I am sharing, and also using the whiteboard tools.  A picture is worth a thousands words and in our staff meetings I constantly use that feature.

I like Joseph's comment about polls though and I will start using them!

    Hey Danielle,
Polling and screen share are very helpful. If I were to say something different, I would say sharing a file within the chat feature is very convenient.

My favorite Zoom feature is the annotation tool for everyone to use during the presentation. Here is the link to the help page if anyone needs it
