How to Utilize Resources for CE Students?

I am a 3rd semester student studying civil engineering. I recently joined ASCE. As a new member, I'm not sure where to start and what contents I consume in order to gain knowledge and add value to myself. Would you kindly consider guiding me on where I should get started. I am excited to learn this profession!

    Thankyou!

    Dear Rajat,

As a former active student member, I would say start with the ASCE student chapter at your university and look for any leadership opportunities available.
It may be late to be part of the community as the school year already started, yet, you can always contact them and see what kind of activities they have and how you can be a part of the volunteer group or if they have any competitions you can take part at.

Also notice, the chapter gives back to you what you already gave it. You won't benifit from the events if you don't show up! And you won't meet new students/professionals/academics if you were shy sitting in the background.

Virtually speaking, you have a big big opportunity to seeking the online events that ASCE is sponsoring and you can attend ASCE Convention from where ever you are in the world - p.s students pay less ;) And attend free events as well as the Virtual Round Table that ASCE is hosting each month.

You already did what you did by using ASCE collaboration to talk to ASCE professionals, go ahead and update your profile, have a photo and start speaking for your self here as ASCE Collaborate is one of the most amusing platforms and beneficial as well.

Best of luck and you can always ask us ahead. Use those years as a student wisely.

    Dear Rajat,

I agree with what @Hala Abdo said and by simply posting on this forum you already took the first step and put yourself out there.

I would advise you to volunteer for the ASCE competitions such as the Concrete Canoe Competition as well as the Steel Bridge Competition. This will allow you to meet other students as well as professionals and will furthermore teach you important skills not necessarily tought in the classroom such as collaboration, organization, teamwork, and leadership.

I would also advise you to read the ASCE publication that come with your student membership such as the ASCE magazine as well as some past threads on Collaborate. Although some of the information may be out of your current scope you will become familiar over time.

As @Hala Abdo stated, "the chapter gives back to you what you already gave it".

    Best of luck!

Thank you for your suggestions. Though I don't have a student chapter in my college but I've already joined in some local clubs for civil engineering for more exposure. Also I'm thinking of starting a student chapter in my college and bring similar minded people together. I hope this pandemic gets over soon so I can start with that. Anyways, thank you so much for your suggestions.

Thanks for the tag, @Hala Abdo. There is a process in forming a student chapter. You can find details at this link. @Sandra Bolton, is the ASCE staff contact for our R10 student chapters. I'm sure she would be happy to answer any questions.
