Want to turn those job applications into job interviews?

It's all about crafting the perfect resume.

The way you present your work history isn't just important; it can be the reason you get that call for an interview.

And the ASCE Resume Workshop can help.

Upload your resume to this thread as a Word document and get professional feedback from the workshop's team of career coaches. This thread will be open through Monday, March 16. Coaches will share their feedback on the thread. Please contact me if you have any questions about participating in the workshop.

If you have resume related questions, please start a new thread in the forum. I also recommend reviewing the Top 7 Mistakes Civil Engineers Make on Resumes

    Hello,
First of all, thank you for hosting this forum! As a new grad, my understanding is that resume's can look very different before and after graduating from college, so I am very grateful to have this opportunity to learn how to build my resume as a professional! I have updated my resume to include my current occupation, but it is still mostly in the style I was taught in college, so please help me format it differently if needed. Additionally, I could use help knowing how much I should elaborate on the projects I've worked on as a professional. Right now I have descriptions that are pretty vague, so I would love some feedback in that area too.

Thank you again for taking time out of your day to do this!
    Best,
    Mckenzie Aubuchon

    Hi McKenzie,

Yes you're 100% right in that resumes change the minute you are a student and a working professional. I learned these tips as well so I'm happy to share my tips for your resume specifically that I noticed:
    • Move your Education section to the bottom of your resume instead of at the top. I almost misinterpreted your resume as a student even though you just recently graduated
    • You don't need to list out what you did as a student, so I would remove those three bullet points
    • Proofread your punctuation, commas are not needed in between a month and year
    • Combine ASCE at the university and professional level together in your Involvement section
    • Formatting: your bullets and text under Halff Associates are not aligned with the rest of your resume
    • Formatting: don't include periods at the end of your bullet point
To answer your question about how to elaborate on projects as a professional, here are my tips:
    • List out a few of the projects that you're currently working on and define your tasks that you worked for those specific projects (for me, I like to keep a log of my responsibilities so this will become a useful reference for you in your career)
    • What phase of the project are you working on? (Preliminary planning, PA&ED, PS&E, final design)
    • Instead of coordinating with clients and cities, what decisions were made from those meetings?
Hope this helps you as you advance in your career!

    Cheers,
    Joyce

    Hi Mohit,

    Couple comments on your resume:
    • Space out your sections a little bit more, it's a little hard to read
    • Can you indicate when you started your MS degree? Put month/year - Present and add Expected Graduation: June 2021 so it's clear
    • Include June (year) for your summer intern experience
    • Move your LinkedIn page at the very top with the rest of your contact info
    • Remove "Authorized to work in the US"
    • Be consistent with your font style, I noticed that your Secretary for ASCE SEI experience is in a different style than the rest of your resume
    • I like the bold line that you have underneath Work Experience, use that same line thickness everywhere else in your resume so it looks more uniform

    Hope this helps!

    Hello Salsabila,

Overall your resume looks really nice.  Very neat and organized.

    • I would recommend adding an opening statement of some kind discussing the value you would bring to an employer.
    • It seems a little crowded, maybe eliminate and non-critical words or points.
    • Can you put spaces between the jobs.
I really don't have other comments, it looks great.

    Hi Ashim,

    Couple comments on your resume:
    • Generally great overall layout! Very easy to read and scan for specific things such as relevant coursework or skills.
    • For improving the layout, you could right justify the location of your education (Carbondale, IL) like you did with your date ranges. This could help balance out your resume.
    • Great work customizing your LinkedIn profile URL!
    • For your teaching assistant role, I recommend adding how many students in a class (even if it is approximate).
      • similar to the comment above, you can improve your work experience by adding more quantitative data - for estimations, up to how much money was the total cost? Supervise work - of how many people?
    • For Publications, I recommend including the date that this was published. If this is ongoing you can write it as a date range i.e. Jan. 2019 - Present
    • For skills, you could add what version of the program i.e. AutoCAD 2020
    • For your interests listed, is there a way you can "show, not tell" them? I see that you have a seismic design course under relevant coursework, maybe is there a more recent class project you can highlight? I see the one from 2015. Other ways are joining a student competition in the field of your interests whether it is in seismic, CAD, or Model Simulations.
    Hope this helps!

    Hi Alex,

I noticed you submitted a CV instead of a Resume. There are some differences even though they share a lot of the same data. My recommendation is to research these differences and try to have both a Resume and CV ready when looking for job opportunities. For your CV, I like your format and my recommendation is to add more data regarding the projects you participated in. I recommend including how you helped in the development of the projects - design, analysis, etc... In your professional experience, you have the years (duration) in year-year format and other in month/year format. I recommend to stick to one format, and review your spacing. The dates are not aligning when you looked at the paper. I hope these comments can help you a bit.

Let me start off by saying thank you for the opportunity and for the work that will be put into looking at these resumes. From recent-grad students to workers looking to beef up their resume, we thank you! I will be applying to new jobs soon closer to the big city I leave near. I want to clean up this resume and frame the experience I have had so far in a way that would look attract employers despite me applying to job in a slightly different field than the one I am directly in.

I am looking to take the experience I have at my current position and market it towards a design job, despite me not really doing design at my current position.

I've rearranged it some and reduced it down.  Honestly, it should be one page. Your CV should be a comprehensive list of work you've done but your resume shouldn't be.  It should highlight what you want to convey when applying for a specific job. Let me know if you have questions.

    Hi Fernando,

Since you uploaded a Word document, I added my comments there and am returning it back to you. There were a few formatting issues, and it would be helpful to know more about a couple items, including:
    • Level of proficiency (basic, intermediate, advanced) with some of the software skills listed
    • Any work with prior employers that you would consider creative or innovative and would demonstrate your problem-solving abilities.
Let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello Jess,

Your resume was assigned to me.

Your resume looks really great.  Here a few comments:

    • Great content, it just seems a bit squished in.  Work on eliminating some non-critical words or sentences in the job descriptions.
    • Do you have any extracurricular activities you do or organizations you belong to?  I recommend adding them.
    • I would encourage an objective or opening statement discussing how you can provide value to the employer.
    • You could change text to size 10.5 if needed.
    That's it, looks great!

Hi Adam! I was assigned to review your resume and have the following comments and suggestions to make your resume stand out even more:
    • You have your PE and ENV SP certification so add those to your name! It should read as Adam Eaton, PE, ENV SP. These are big achievements and recruiters may miss that because it wasn't listed on your first page
    • I think your resume format would flow better if you switched your work experience responsibilities and your employment dates so the body of your resume is aligned left, and the dates are aligned right (that way you can fit your employment dates on one line to fill in that white space)
    • You have a lot of great experience so it doesn't seem necessary to include all the jobs you've had back from 2011 on your resume since it exceeds 1 page (that's what LinkedIn is for)
    • I would recommend removing your coursework from your resume since you have graduated already and you have plenty of working experience to vouch for your knowledge
    • It seems repetitive to have a section for Professional Affiliations, Leadership, Volunteer and Public Service and then again under your Education. I would recommend removing it from your Education since some of it bleeds into your professional experience

    Hope this helps!

Hi Grace! I checked out your resume and have the following comments. Please let me know if you need any clarification and I'll do the best I can to help.
    • Overall the layout is very clean which is great.
    • I would encourage you to include an objective section in your resume.
      • You'll want one version of your resume to be general for career fairs and such. But any specific companies you apply to you should customize your resume for that company.
      • In your objective section make sure to list your personal values and skills and how they align with the overall mission and vision of the company or position that you are applying for. You will need to put in some work to research the company but if you're not willing to do that up front, how serious can you really be about getting the job right?
    • Under Education
      • I would only include relevant coursework if there is space after adding the objective. If you include the courses, make sure you only list courses that are relevant to the specific position you are applying for. And also best not to include general courses like senior design that everyone has to take.
      • Remove the coursework from the Global experience section. You can include relevant courses in the section above. Personally, I would probably take out the global exp all together but you could leave in if there is space.
    • Under your work experience
      • Put the year after each month. I understood what you were doing by the time I got to the third item but most employers don't look at your resume for very long so you want to be overly clear and not add any possible confusion.
      • For a new graduate, I think you do a good job of sharing your experience here.
      • Some areas you don't need to be so specific - "Designed 6, 8, 12 inch water main replacement...." and you could just write "Designed water main replacement...."
      • Some areas you should be more specific - "Updated the City of Cambridge GIS...." What did you update? Who benefited from this update? Can you quantify the benefit, if so list it here?
        • Another example "Conducted drainage calcs....". Calcs for what? Can you name specific calcs and design methods here? You can use this space to showcase key words that would establish yourself as an ideal candidate.
    • In the footer
      • I like the references upon request statement
      • I would remove the Revised date. This might help remind you when you last edited the resume but I don't need to see this when I receive a resume. I would expect that if someone gives me a resume, it is up to date.
Essentially, your resume is a one page guide that helps me learn about you and grab my interest enough to call you in for an interview. Find ways to use key words from the job posting description. Get specific when highlighted skills, technical expertise, and values you brought to previous employers/clients. Hope this helps!

Hi Nabin, you have an impressive resume and I would like to provide my comments/suggestions to make your resume stand out more:
    • It is a little busy with text so I would recommend trimming it down if you can and removing anything that seems repetitive
      • From your Synopsis section, I would remove the bullet stating that you are well versed with civil engineering software since you list your technical skills below
      • Remove your bullet about possessing strong academic base - that's pretty evident
      • Remove coursework from your bachelors degree
    • I see two instances where you listed Kathmandu Engineering College but it's not listed under your Education
    • List your certifications and activities in chronological order, with the most recent at the top
    Hope this helps!

    Hi @M.R. Hasan,

I reviewed the resume and I have the following comments. Please feel free to reach me if you need me to clarify. I hope these will help make the resume stand out.

    • I recommend adding an Objective Section. This section is important when you are tweaking your resume to fit a specific job. You can add some of the data used in the "Key Qualifications" to complete the objective.
    • Key Qualifications Section: I recommend subdividing this section (e.g. Affiliation, certification, skills, etc..). Also to move your education and experience before this section.
      • In Texas E.I.T. stands for Engineer-in-Training, maybe double-check with Ohio professional Engineers and Surveyors Board if "Engineer Intern" is the correct term for this certification.
    • Experience Section. There are some additional space and spelling/grammar errors in the body. Also, check the test alignment. Some of the bullets points have left alignment while others have justify alignment. This is making the resume looks like it has different spaces.
      • Other academic Projects: I feel you can move this one to Volunteer or maybe under the Affiliation if you create a new section as recommended above.
In general, the layout is good. I recommend changing your font type. Calibri is usually easier to read once you go below 12pt font size. A resume is normally a one-page representation of yourself to help recruiters/managers to see if there is enough interest for an interview. At this time, the resume is consisting of two pages, and most of your experience is on the second page. My recommendation is to try to have a one-page resume, if not possible, try to have your experience on the first page.

I hope this helps, and feel free to reach me if you need me to clarify any of the comments.

    Hi Jonathan,

Since you provided a Word file, I have added my comments there, and am sending back to you. In general, your resume is nicely presented and logically laid out. I had a few formatting suggestions, and would also like to know more about some of your software skills. It would also be helpful to see more description of things that you have done for your employers that were creative/innovative or otherwise demonstrate your problem-solving abilities.

Let me know if you have questions.

    Hi Hussein,

First off, your resume has a lot of good content and a clear layout. It is easy to understand on first glance, which is the goal. I have some minor suggestions, but a major overhaul is not needed.

    • I'd take out "Who is" in the overview. The second thought can just start with "Strong professional..." and only capitalize the first word, strong.
    • Does "DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES" need to be in all caps? If not, put in normal title writing (Design Specifications of Highway Bridges)
    • Try and get the resume onto one page. I would reduce heading font size and white space a little, around words like Overview, Education, Experience, etc. in order to save space.
    • The exact start & end date for each job doesn't hurt, but it also isn't required. Month and year are sufficient if that's easier for you.
    • Can you provide a little more detail about "follow up construction works"? I see what kind of projects you were working on, but not what type of follow-up tasks you were completing or the skills you used/gained in doing so.
    • Similarly, in your supervising and managing positions, please provide a bit more detail while still keeping it concise. How many people did you supervise? What are some on-the-job skills you can emphasize in these bullet points?
    • Please watch capitalization. All of the words, except the first word, in each bullet point for your different jobs can be lowercase. On the other hand, the O in Microsoft Office should be capitalized.
    • References section can be cut for space if you like. Companies won't hesitate to ask for references if they want them.
Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you, ASCE for this opportunity to review our resumes

Below I attached my resume for review. I graduated civil engineering from ABET-accredited program and have passed my FE

I want to apply for internships/Entry-level positions in civil engineering including water, wastewater, and environmental engineering.

    I had 2 internships before.
I am ASCE member since my 2nd year in school and was a board member twice(Social Media Team Leader 2018, VP of Community Service 2019)

The thing is that I feel I am missing space for listing my volunteering leadership positions with ASCE and listing my membership for ASCE National Capital Section.

Also, is listing EIT after my name is enough or should I mention my EIT in education?

    Thank you and best regards,

    Hello Hala Abdo,
I have looked over your resume, and overall, you have a great, concise, and professionally formatted resume. I really like that you have a Career Summary section. Your resume is easy to follow and key information about you can be found quickly. Here are some comments that I think can improve your resume:
    • I would revise your Career Summary section to better highlight what you are looking for in an engineering position, and how it can relate to your career goals. For example, "A graduate of  ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program and registered EIT, looking for a civil engineering opportunity that focuses on environmental and wastewater engineering, as I pursue becoming a Professional Engineer." This section ideally would change each time you submit your resume, so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for. This can be the difference between being a "qualified" candidate, and a "preferred" candidate.
    • Throughout your resume you have words that are capitalized that do not need to be. For example, in "Integrated Material Testing and Analyzed ASTM standards..." Analyzed does not need to be capitalized. Also, in "Executed report and` document tracking..." remove the `. Make sure to carefully go over grammar and punctuation in your resume, as this is your first impression with a potential employer.
    • I would re-word "Related Expediences" to "Work Experience". I would also highlight the work that you did, to better demonstrate your experience and your capabilities. For example, "Conducted all assigned calculations, reports, and spreadsheets..." List out what type of calculations you performed, and what type of reports and spreadsheets you created. This will better highlight your technical and report writing capabilities.
    • I would re-word "Activities" to "Professional Organization Contributions". You could put your ASCE entries here too. I noticed that the format (font size, font type, bullets) of this section look to be different from the rest of your resume. You resume should have a consistent format, so verify that everything matches.
If you have any questions, or want clarification on any of my comments, please let me know and I will do my best to answer you in a timely manner.

    Dear Mr. Dough,

    Thank you for your review.
    I have a few questions,

    Career Summary
Should I keep this line or it seems extra? "Backed by internships experiences in a governmental water institution and an engineering studies center."

The reason I used Related Experiences instead of Work Experiences is that I have unmentioned work experiences like; Vendor Merchandise at Macys and another as a sales development representative. Do you think I should mention these or just stick to the ones mentioned with Work Experience head?

I am also working on rephrasing my internships responsibilities, can I share them with you via email when I am done?

And thank you very much for the tips, I have amended my resume accordingly.

    Dear Halo Abdo,

For your Career Summary, I would recommend combining your first 2 sentences into something similar to "A graduate of ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program, with internship experience, seeking an opportunity in Civil Engineering." Your work experience entries will cover what you did during your internships.

Thanks for providing more information on your Related Experiences. With that in mind, I would recommend changing the title of this section to Engineering Experience, and stick with your 2 internships that you currently have.

Feel free to reach out to me through email about anything related to your resume. I am here to help!

    Hi Praveen,

This is a well-structured and clear resume. Most of my edits on the Word doc are just a bit of formatting and proofreading to make it feel smoother. Please see the comments in the document for other suggestions.

A few of the items (photo, signature) might be appropriate on a CV but do not generally appear on resumes. Similarly, a CV can be any length but I generally recommend keeping your resume to 1 page. You may need to rearrange things a bit or cut some less important information (a few of your other achievements at the bottom?)

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

    Amar,

I'm going to guess this is your CV and not a resume. A resume should be no more than 1 page long. I have seen some decent resumes that are 2 pages long but I personally dread reading them.

Make sure to include your contact info in the header, and objective, education (just Bachelors and above), work experience, volunteer/awards if they would help your case to get a job.

If you want to update a resume and send it to me, I'd be happy to review it for you.

Hi Janie! Overall your resume looks great, very clean and organized. Here are some of my comments and suggestions to make your resume stand out even more:
    • Add EIT to your name at the top
    • If you have graduated from college already, you should move your Education section to the bottom of your resume
    • Make your name bigger
    • Remove periods from the end of your sentences, not necessary for bullet points
    • I would love to know more about your working experience, don't be afraid to be specific with your tasks and projects that you worked on
      • For i.e., what level of PS&E did you work on? 30%, 60%, 90%, final design?
      • If you helped design something, just say "Designed..."
      • Remove the verb "Assisted"
    • What was your role/position for Steel Bridge? What parts of the bridge did you help design?
    • Rename Additional Information to "Technical Skills"
    • Make sure your text is consistently aligned
      • Your bullets for Secretary at UTA ASCE is not aligned like the rest

    Hope this helps!

    Hello Yu Zhang,
I have looked over your resume, and overall, you have a lot of great information. I can find the key information quickly based on your section titles.Your resume is organized and has a relatively consistent format. Here are some comments I have that I feel can improve your resume:
    • Summary Section - I really like that you have this as part of your resume. I think this section can be expanded to clarify what your intent is and what your career goals are. For example "10 years of work and research experience in hydraulic/hydrologic engineering, looking for a full time research position at a respected University, as I continue pursuing my Ph.D." This statement give a summary of your capabilities, while also detailing what position you are looking for and what one of your career goals are. This can let the reader of your resume know if you are a good fit for them. Ideally, this section of your resume will change each time you submit your resume, so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for.
    • Capitalize your address.
    • I would re-organize your resume so the most important information is on the first page. I would move your Skills, Honor & Awards sections and possibly your work experience to the second page, and move your Publications and Presentations to the first page, as these establish you as more of a subject matter expert.
    • I am not a researcher or a published author, so how you have formatted your Publication and Presentation sections may be the correct way. But for me, I would like to see the title of the publication or presentation first, and make it stand out by making it a bold font type. I think this would make it easier for someone to see the topics you are writing and presenting about. The goal is to highlight your accomplishments quickly and easily.
    • I would recommend using a different color other than red on your resume. I like the color change, but red on a document is typically identified with errors or corrections needed to be made. Even if it is subconsciously, someone looking at your resume may have a negative context about seeing red.
    • Since you resume has multiple pages, I would add a footer with your name and page number on it. This will let someone quickly re-organize your resume if it gets mixed up and lets the reader of your resume know there are multiple pages, so they make sure to look at both pages.
If you have any questions, or want clarification on any of my comments, please let me know and I will do my best to answer you in a timely manner.

    Hello Mr. Cantrell,

Thank you so much for your suggestions, they are really helpful. I really appreciate your first advice about the summary section. Though, to be honest, I would like to keep the structure of the resume. (regarding to your third advice) Because what I aimed to focus is to enter industry area. I think it's better to put work experiences in the first page than move them to the second page. I will revise my resume accordingly. Thank you so much for your effort, I really appreciate it!

    Trey,

Overall this was one of the cleanest resumes I've reviewed so good job! Some areas you can get more specific. Just don't get "wordy" for no reason. Every word you place on your resume should be there for a reason and have a purpose.

    I have some comments below.

Suggest including an objective. Make sure you highlight your skills in a concise manner. This section should share with the company you apply for what skills you will bring to their office.

    - Under related experience: What kind of practical hands on experience with traffic control? Be more specific
    - You don't necessarily need to list "Other Employment". I would rename the Related Experience to Past Experience and remove the Other Emp. Heading.
    - Under Operations Shift Lead – watch your wording here. I got confused which tense you were using and such.
                     - How did you ensure their needs were met? List 1-2 specific needs.

I would suggest adding a "Skills" section and list various certifications, software expertise,

Hi Cali! I was assigned to review your resume and have some comments/suggestions to make your resume stand out even more:
    • Once you have officially obtained your EIT certification, add that to your name
    • Say "Expected Graduation: May 2020"
    • Format "West Virginia University Institute of Technology" as one line
    • Replace Spring and Summer with actual months
    • Format your text so you don't have 1 or 2 words eating up a whole line - utilize your white space effectively
    • Be consistent with text sizes

    Hope this helps!

    Mr. Dahal,

I enjoyed reading your resume and visiting your webpage. I believe the general layout is on the spot. Also, you have all the sections needed for a resume, and that is important. I see you are looking for a full-time position, so my only recommendation is to work on your job experience. I see you have some experience in the academic realm as well as in the workforce realm. My advice is to take some time and describe tasks (design, analysis, calculation) you performed in these jobs outside of the academic experience.

I hope this will help you and feel free to reach me if you need any clarification.

    Sincerely,

    Mohsen,

I have reviewed your CV and made a number of suggestions to trim it down to a 2-page resume that can be supported by a separate CV if desired. In general, it is logically laid out and nicely presented. However, it would be helpful if you were able to highlight any research that is groundbreaking, and the positive impacts that research has had on the industry or on society. Since you provided a Word document, I have added comments to it, and am returning back to you.

Let me know if you have questions.

    Hello Shabnam Khanal,
I have looked over your resume, and overall you have a easy to follow and professional resume. You have done a great job of listing your abilities in a concise and informative way. I am able to find key information quickly and easily, all on a single page. Here are some comments I have that I feel could improve your resume.
    • While it is easy to see what you are capable of from your resume, it does not show what you are looking for in a new position or what your career goals are. I think adding an section called "Objective" could help achieve this. This section can be 1 or 2 sentences that describes briefly your capabilities while also stating your expectations for your next job. For example, "Masters student specializing in structural designs looking for a full time engineering position focusing on bridges, as I continue to pursue my Professional Engineer license." Or, "Masters student with teaching assistant experience looking for a teaching opportunity at a respected University, while pursuing my Ph.D.." While these statements are different, they both convey your experience, what you are looking for in a position, and what your future career goals are. Ideally, this section will change each time you submit your resume so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for.
    • I would move your Professional Experience section ahead of your Technical Skills section, as I feel this highlights your capabilities more than your Technical Skills section does.
    • I would remove the headings (A,B,C and 1,2,3) from your Professional Experience section. These are not necessary and can be confusing. I would use bullets in places of the numbers, as this is more straightforward and follows the format of the rest of your resume. I would make your Responsibilities similar to your other entries (not bold, no underline, just a bullet point). You can still list your responsibilities as they are with a sub-bullet.
If you have any questions, or want clarification on any of my comments, please let me know and I will do my best to answer you in a timely manner.

    Moulay,

I have reviewed your resume.  It looks great overall, just a few comments.

    - Consider moving your contact information into the header to free up some space.
    - Add an objective or Introductory Statement and consider using some of what you have on your LinkedIn profile: More than 900 hours of Research Assistantship experience combined with a sound academic background in Structural Engineering (GPA 3.91) and a demonstrated history of working in the construction industry. Can thrive within a team or indepently in fast-paced environment with littel supervision. Skilled in AutoCAD,SAP 2000,SAFE, Microsoft Excel, Microsofft project .  (check your LinkedIn summary for spelling).
    - Under Education, just to make it look cleaner, maybe move the location to the second line:
    (Toronto, ON, Expected May 2020)
    - I also recommend trying to highlight your multiple languages more prominently, maybe in introductory statement?

    Good luck!

    Hi Ravi,

This is a nicely formatted, clear resume. A few suggestions:

    • Usually people include their city, state or city, country up at the top with their contact info.
    • What does SRM stand for?
    • Be consistent with verb tenses. For example, for CCRT, you wrote designed and then changed to research on and selection of. I would say designed and then researched and selected.
    • I would break down your tasks in each experience item into bullets. For example:
      • Designed a canoe model...
      • Researched lower density...
    • And for the next one:
      • Created CAD models...
      • Performed dead, live...
    • For Hardayal, perhaps: The company has immense experience, or I gained immense experience.
    • In general, I recommend keeping a resume to 1 page. You may have to adjust spacing or cut some less valuable information to make this happen.
    • For the projects, I think it's more important to discuss your duties or the skills you gained/used, rather than just generally describing the project. Again, I would recommend bullet points to make the resume easier to read through.

Good luck and please let me know of any questions!

Karen, my first impression when I open your resume is "wow, there is a lot of words". That's not always a bad thing but resumes generally do not get "studied"; you want to give me just enough info to grab my interest to call you in for an interview.

That said, see my comments below.

    • I would remove "nationality" from your header. Perhaps replace it with your LinkedIn profile link.
    • I would remove "Expected" from the GPA. Just state "GPA: 3.2/4.0".
    • Although I warn above about being wordy, you should share more specifically what the new work strategy was that increased efficiency by 80%. That could be an attention grabber.
    • The intern experience is great.
    • I would highlight what topics you tutored as a Private Tutor.
    • Again, the volunteering activities section has a LOT of words but it doesn't seem wasted when I read it. That's a good thing! I love how descriptive you get when talking about raising money, increasing efficiency, or leading teams. You should redo some of your Work Experience section to be more specific. If you need to take out a line or two from the Volunteer section to do that, then that is what I'd recommend. Just do not exceed one page.

Overall, it's a solid resume, IF someone will take the time to read all of it.

    Hi Saaid,

I hope the following recommendation will help set up your resume, and I hope you finish your school strong and congratulation on your soon graduation.

Objective - I like your objective. It is missing what type of position you are applying for, you can say Full-time, co-op if you looking for additional academic degrees once you complete this one. Additionally, this objective can be personalized for each company and position you are applying to. Keep that in mind when you submit the resumes to companies.

Education - Let's add expectation day for graduation as May 2020. Right now you have 2020 and this can be May or December. You want to let the reader know you are close to graduation (today being March 2020). Usually, students will add which courses they have taken, taking into account which field you are applying to. Same as objective, these classes can be personalized based on what field you want to follow and the job field.

Internship/Projects - Add more data in regards to what you Plan, Analysis and Design. the description is too general. This is the opportunity to show the skills you acquired on these internships and project deliverables.

For your general layout - try to arrange your data to fit one page. A resume is normally a one-page representation of yourself. They can be longer as you grow your experience and participate in more projects. finally, for your workshop, I recommended adding a date is possible.

Please feel free to reach me if you need clarification in any of these comments. I hope they help you.

    Sam,

You confidence in your resume is well founded. It is very nicely done, and provides just the right amount of information for someone at your experience level. With regard to converting some of the duties into accomplishments, try to highlight creative or innovative ways that you have solved technical problems, improved business or engineering processes, or saved your employer time and money. Try and quantify the results. For example, your resume mentioned that you developed standards for project delivery and quality. I would expect that  those improvements would result in:
    • Increases in efficiency and schedule/budget compliance during design;
    • Fewer comments from permitting agency reviews; and
    • A reduction in the number and cost of construction change orders.
One other item I noticed was that your resume says you expected to graduate in 2018. I assume you graduated, so please update the wording. Otherwise, update the expected graduation date.

    Melany

    Hello Mohammad Said Jamal Abuhalimeh,
I have looked over your resume and overall, you have a well organized, professional resume. It is easy to follow, I can quickly find key information, and it is formatted consistently. My comments are going to be brief, as you already have a great resume here. But here are some things that I feel can improve your resume.
    • I would add a section titled "Objective" as your first entry under your contact information. This section can be 1 or 2 sentences that describe what you are looking for in a new position. For example, "Civil Engineering student looking for full-time engineering position specializing in concrete design, as I pursue my Masters degree." Ideally, this section will change each time you submit your resume so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for.
    • There is some "blank" space between your contact information and your Education entry, and also at the bottom of your resume. I would increase the font size of your entries to help fill out this space and to make your resume easier to read. I would keep your resume to a single page though.
    • Under Research Experience, I believe "capstone" is misspelled.
    • Since your Awards entries are education related, you could combine this section with your Education entry.
    • There is no gap between your Awards and Leadership Experience entries. This is different than the rest of your resume. Add a gap to these entries to be consistent.
    • Under Languages, I would re-word each entry, so they are easier to understand. "Fluent in English" and "Native speaker is Arabic" are much easier to understand.
If you have any questions, or want clarification on any of my comments, please let me know and I will do my best to answer you in a timely manner.

    Mehran,

I have reviewed your resume, and have the following recommendations:

    • I like the resume layout, it is well organized, however your contact information takes up a lot of space, you might condense it.
    • Consider adding an introductory statement, discussing the VALUE you can bring to companies.
    • Consider adding some more points to your jobs to classify responsibilities.
    • Check the resume for grammar, some of the section titles should be plural Publications, Licenses and Memberships.
Great layout here - good luck!

    Maxx,
You should have no issues getting interviews with a resume like this. Take a look at my comments below for some additional adjustments.

Some of your contact information is showing up as black boxes on my screen. It's possible the problem is on my end, but double check that. Perhaps send it to a few friends for them to confirm.

Your "Objective" hooked me in, which is awesome, but I almost completely missed it because there was no heading and the italics didn't make it stand out.

OK, your resume is top notch! Way to go. The problem is, and this is a HUGE problem, I have no idea what type of job you are looking for. You have some amazing experience. I was reading through this thinking "boy I'd hire this person in a heartbeat if I knew what kind of work he wanted to do". So take this as another tip to clarify all this in your Objective section of the resume. The rest will take care of itself.

    Awesome Education and Skills section!

Thank you Nicolai for taking the time to go through my resume.
I purposely blacked out my contact information for visibility reasons.

Thank you for the note on the objective section. I often go back and forth on having it or not. Same with having a 2 page or one page resume.

    Hi Caitlin,

I hope you doing great with the current worldwide situation. I had the opportunity to review your resume and I have a couple of recommendations for your resume.

Objective - I feel like the "right-sized" solution may need more explanation. I like how you introduce your experience and the civil engineer field you want to apply for. One item you may want to add is that you are looking for full-time positions, which is that I believe since you are moving and looking for a new job.

Professional Experience - The first thing I see is that two of your job positions you are showing you're are presently working. Please double-check if that is correct since it can bring up some questions.

Education & certification - I recommend to have this section in one column instead of two columns.

Overall Layout - You are missing the skill sections where you have the opportunity to tell the reader what kind of software you are proficient with. Also, if you are involved in any organization (ASCE) is also nice to add in your resume since it shows involvement in the engineering community.

I hope these comments will help you achieve a better resume and good luck in your moving and search for a new adventure! Feel free to reach me if you want me to clarify any of the comments.

Hello, I would be grateful for your comments on my CV/Resume. In particular how I have separated the Key Skills on the second page. I have used this format for job applications within the United Kingdom. What would you recommend to change for applying within the US?

A comment I had from a recent job application was that all of my projects are more than two years old. The reason for this is that I only chose relevant projects. I can now correct this worth more recent work form the job that I currently have. But the general idea/format is there.

Thanks for the opportunity for some one to offer guidance!!

    Hi Matthew,

I reviewed your resume and have a few suggestions. First, to answer your question on the Key Skills section, I think that much of the information is very specific and would be more appropriate as part of the descriptions of past positions or past projects. If included, the list of key skills should be a very short, general descriptions like "Design of concrete and steel structures," "Construction administration," or "Preparation of design fee and construction change order proposals." This information could be included in a brief "Summary of Qualifications," section at the beginning for the resume.

I am also not sure how I feel about having your project experience in table format. At first glance, the material in the tables really overpowers the rest of the resume. Consider presenting this information in a more narrative format.

I am returning more detailed comments in your Word document. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Regards,

    Hello Muhammad Faisal Hanif,
I have reviewed your resume and overall you have a well organized and professional resume. Your formatting is easy to follow. I like that you use bullet points to summarize your information. I like that you have a footer for both of your pages. Here are some comments that I feel can improve your resume:
    • I would add the town and country that you live in to your contact information underneath your name. This will allow readers of your resume know how close you are to their office or project site.
    • I would add a new section underneath your contact information titled "Objective". This section can be 1 or 2 sentences that briefly describes your experience, while also stating what you are looking for for your career. For example, "Civil Engineer with 6+ years of water resource experience looking for a manager role in a respected civil engineering firm." Or, "Civil Engineer with 6+ years of water resource experience looking for a research position at a respected University." Both statements highlight your ability, while also showing what you are specifically interested in. This can help make you a better "fit" for the company, agency, or university you are applying for. Ideally, this section will change each time you submit your resume so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for.
    • I would list your Education & Qualifications section under the new "Objective" section. (So the second section on your resume). This information is needed to show that you meet the basic education requirements, so this should be one of the first entries on your resume. You could also include your Registered Engineer with PEC in your Education & Qualifications section, as currently you don't list any "qualifications".
    • Under Professional Experience, it looks like the line spacing for these entries are different then the rest of your resume. Some of the "g"'s are being cut off due to the tight line spacing. I would increase your line spacing to match the rest of your resume for consistency.
    • I would add you name to the footer on each page of your resume. That way if your resume gets mixed up, it can easily be re-organized.
If you have any questions, or want clarification on any of my comments, please let me know and I will do my best to answer you in a timely manner.

    Jongseok,

I have reviewed your resume and here is some feedback:

    • Consider putting your contact information in the header to free up some space.
    • Add an introductory statement describing the value you would provide to companies.
    • Consider bolding your different positions to differentiate them.
    • Consider bolding some items in Work Experience so some of the important points stand out.
    Nice resume overall!

Thank you for taking your time to review my resume, Mr Fasano.
Thanks to your advice, I could make it more intuitive differentiating my careers.

However I can't guess the way of describing the values I would provide to companies. I mean, I don't know how to express that in the Resume format.
It would be very helpful if you give me an example sentence that designates some values of one. Can I get some examples or your sentences expressing the values?

    Hi Ashim,

    Congratulations on graduating last month!

    Couple comments on your resume:
    • This is a neat overall layout for your resume; however, the font gets a bit small and it leaves a lot of white space. I recommend increasing the font size and maybe adding an additional section with leadership experience or relevant coursework.
    • Great work already customizing your LinkedIn! (For those reading this thinking "how in the world did they do that?", see the following article: https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/87/customizing-your-public-profile-url?lang=en )
    • For your experience with Ahmadiah Contracting & Trading Company, I would add either the end date or clarify that you presently work there. If you presently work there, please change all bullet points to the present tense. It would also be beneficial to add quantitative data to these bullets points where possible - how many people were you supervising on the site? How many different material suppliers and subcontractors were you working with?
    • For your experience with Danash Contracting & Trading Company, I would recommend adding more quantitative data about the project. How large of a project was it? How much did it cost? These would help whoever is reading your resume to understand the scale of the project.
    • For the final year project, I recommend adding the date range that you worked on it i.e. Sept 2019 - Present
    • The two training programs may be better to put under the certifications section.
    • For Computer Skills section, you could add what version of the program i.e. AutoCAD 2020

    • For strengths, I recommend that you don't include this as a specific section. Instead, I challenge you to incorporate being a Self-starter and Team-driven into your work and project experience. For leading, what teams have you lead? How many on a team? Any successes you can share? i.e. Lead a team of 5 in project execution that completed project 3 months ahead of schedule. For self-starter, what initiatives have your created that have helped the past companies you worked at or school projects? i.e. implemented tracking process that improved efficiency by 30%.
    • For associations, I would recommend adding how long you have been an ASCE member.
    • For certifications, you could add when certifications expire / need renewal. I also recommend adding the trainings here in case they were associated with a certificate.

    Hope this helps!

    Hello Alexandre Martinez,
I have reviewed your resume and overall you have a well organized resume. It is clear to see from your resume that you are intelligent and a subject matter expert in hydrology with the effects of climate change. While this does come through clearly, there are some things that do not; mainly, what are you looking for, and what are your career goals. Here are some comments I feel can improve your resume.
    • I like that you have an opening statement that gives a brief summary of your accomplishments. I would further expand on this statement, and give it a title of "Objective" (matching your Core competencies and Selected Experience titles). I would expand this statement to include your ideal job situation and what your future goals are. For example, "Data scientist with hydrological event and climate change experience looking for a research opportunity focusing on climate change at a respected University, while continuing to pursue my Ph.D." This sentence tells the reader of your resume 3 very important things within the first few seconds, and lets them know if you would be a good fit for them. Ideally, this section of your resume will change each time you submit your resume so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for.
    • I would remove the Ph.D candidate from the top part of your resume (under your name) and include the town and state/country you live in. This will allow readers of your resume know how close you are to their office, university, or job site.
    • I would move your Education section to be right underneath your new "Objective" section (2nd section on your resume). Your education is one of the first things readers of your resume will be looking for, as it is typically the first qualification requirement. So this should be near the top of your resume.
    • I would remove your Core Competencies section, as this information is already included throughout your resume.
    • In your Selected Experience section, I would use bullet points under each position (rather than italicizing the first word of each entry). This will make it easier to read and will keep a consistent format throughout your resume.
      • I would also use University of California, Irvine instead of Center for Hydrometeorolgy and Remote Sensing, unless these are 2 completely distinct entities.
      • I would capitalize "research" in "Center for research in Water Resources (Austin, Texas)".
      • Under your Volunteer entry, the second line of your entry goes further out than the first line. Make your margins consistent with the rest of your resume.
    • I would move your Peer-Reviewed Publications and Peer-Reviewed Presentations (recommend changing the titles to what I have listed) entries below your Selected Experience section. These entries establish you as a subject matter expert and ideally should be on the first page of your resume, as this can really help you stand apart from other candidates.
      • I am not well versed in how publications and presentations are presented, but highlighting the name of the article or presentation (perhaps in bold) would let the reader quickly know what the topic of the publication or journal was, which in my opinion would be more beneficial than the authors first. But again, the way you have it listed may be the "correct" or industry standard.
    • I would recommend trying to combine your Outreach Activities and Grants sections with your Peer-Reviewed Presentations section, as this information is inter-connected.
    • I would recommend combining your Honors and Community Involvement sections and re-naming the section to Professional Organization Involvement.
      • I would move your fellowship and graduation with highest honors entries of your Honors section to your Education section, as these are inter-connected.
      • I would move your Musician entry from Community Involvement to Other Skills, and use bullets for each entry under Other Skills to be consistent with the rest of your resume.
    • Add a footer with your name and page number on each page of your resume. That way if your resume gets mixed up, it is easy to re-organize and it lets the reader of your resume know that there are 2 pages, so they will look at both pages.
    • Capitalize all words in your section titles.
If you have any questions, or want clarification on any of my comments, please let me know and I will do my best to answer you in a timely manner.

    Hello Smit Sanghvi,
I have reviewed your resume. Overall, I am really impressed with your resume. It is well organized, professional, easy to follow with bullets, and you were able to maximize the space on your resume to keep it on a single page. Because your resume is at a high starting point, I only have a few comments on how to improve upon your resume. You should be really proud, as you have clearly put time and thought into your resume. Good job!
    • The one big thing that I do feel will greatly improve your resume is adding a new section called "Objective". This should be the first entry on your resume. This section can be 1 or 2 sentences that provide a brief summary of your experience, while stating what you are looking for in a job opportunity. For example, "Motivated Masters Civil Engineering student looking for engineering position focusing on construction management, while I pursue my Professional Engineer license". This allows the reader of your resume know if you are a good fit for the position they are hiring for. Otherwise, you are leaving it up to the reader to interpret your interests and what your future goals are. Ideally, this section will change each time you submit your resume so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for. This can be the difference between a "qualified" candidate and a "preferred" candidate.
    • Under your Education section, I would list your degree first (in bold) and put the University on the second line. Readers of your resume care less about where you attended, and more on the highest degree you achieved.
    • I would remove the vertical line to the left of your name
    • Under Work Experience, I would remove "project manager" from your entries. For example, rather than "Assisted the project manager in the preparation of..." simply re-word to "Assisted in the preparation of..."C
    • List of words in your resume that do not need to be capitalized: Change order, Purchase order, Scheduling, Field reports, Submittals, Clash detection
If you have any questions, or want clarification on any of my comments, please let me know and I will do my best to answer you in a timely manner.
