WoW...you are posted as the first one out of the gate!!  That said, I wanted to read your resume.  WoW Penn State in 2023!!  Perhaps you are seeking a summer internship in 2022 (if so, then so state the fact with your availability -- April / May through August / September).  Perhaps you are seeking (and will follow up) with a winter one too before graduation?!  Expand upon any volunteer activity at Penn State such as Student Chapter Membership.  Register for the E.I.T. examination.  It is now time to reach out to Industry and Have Fun!!  Be Well and Keep in Touch.

    All the best,

Your resume should open many doors for you.  I really did NOT find anything to improve upon.  I assume that you are a Junior at Columbia with graduation as a Senior in May 2023.  Did Columbia honor a "dual major" for you?  What companies are you reaching out for an internship opportunity?  I noted HNTB within your filename.  If so, then much success to you!!  Do NOT forget the DOT as there is a huge IIJA Initiative under Biden to the tune of $1.7Billion.  Please follow that program; too.

    Good Afternoon:

Only "One" Observation -- Please expand your resume to a maximum of five pages.  Your current resume is too confined and I feel that you can market skills without abbreviation if only a few more pages (with some "white zone" area) were taken.  White Zone = Blank Area.  As a peer reviewer, I had to really focus and read every detail.  That said, many employers do NOT have this time.  First Impression was that it was too complicated and too complex and with every inch of the page taken (no freedom for the reviewer to make quality notes).  However; your skill set is fine and I am NOT suggesting to remove those elements (rather you need to reformat to a more user friendly style).

    All the best,

    David

I have reviewed your resume and you have done a good job so far. Your resume is easy to follow, includes all the key information, and I like your use of color. I think with some minor changes, your resume can be even stronger. Attached are my comments.

    Mohammad,
I think this looks much better! Good work!

The only additional comment I have is that the colors you have under your Languages section (especially the yellow/green color) looks similar to the new light grey background. I would suggest making the yellow/green color something different that will contrast better with the light grey background. Perhaps a shade of blue?

Otherwise, I think your resume is in good shape!

Attached is my resume.  I have a couple particular questions regarding how to structure my resume.  My role really has not changed since I started working for Muscatine Power & Water, only my job title and a gradual progression in responsibility in my work.  Should I be breaking out the description of work under each job title, or have it all as one since the work is all similar and related?

Also, since my work is highly based on specific types of projects that come up, should I have a separate area listing the projects I have worked on?  Should I be describing some of them in particular in my relevant work section?  Or should I just talk more in general about the nature of the work I have done for the project I have worked on?

    Nancy,
I have reviewed your resume and you have a strong starting point. Your resume is easy to follow and professional. I have attached my comments that I feel can improve your resume further.

As for how to group your work experience, I think breaking it out as you have on your resume is the way to go. It shows that you are taking on new responsibility and progressing in your career. If most of the work is the same from one position to the other, you can highlight the differences by including the new duties for your new position and have a bullet point that states "Includes all work responsibilities from Civil Engineer I position", or something similar. That way you are not repeating the duties, but are also showing that you still handle those duties.

For the specific type of projects you have worked on, I think including them in your resume is a good idea, as future employers may be looking for someone that has experience with that specific project type. You can include that in your Object Statement section that I suggest you add to your resume (included in my comments). Or having a stand-alone section just to highlight the different projects is a good idea as well. Just be careful to not let your resume go over 2 pages. Too much information on your resume can actually be a negative thing, as employers will typically spend less than a minute looking at your resume.

If you want any clarification or have questions on my comments, just let me know.

    Basil,
I have reviewed your resume and I really like the format of your resume. Adding a photo of yourself is a nice touch! Your resume is well organized and professional. However, I think you can improve the content of your resume by adding more details and providing some background information on the projects you worked on. Attached are my comments on how I think you can improve the quality of your resume.

If you want any clarification or have questions on my comments, just let me know.

    Isha:

I am glad that you are seeking a summer internship.  I actually had three summer internships (second year as carpenter, third year as nuclear chemist and fourth year as shellfish / soil / water scientist).  As you can observe, I really did NOT bond with Civil Engineering until my Senior year.  I had NO clear professional objective.  Civil Engineering / Environmental Engineering was too huge, and I did NOT know how to track my interests.  I think the same pattern is happening with you.  Recommend that you develop a targeted objective such as "Seek a summer internship within government to leverage and support the infrastructure jobs act."  After all, Biden has sent $1.7 Trillion to government.  Also, I suggest signing up for the E.I.T examination.  Networking with the Engineering Dean at Georgia Institute of Technology can go far.  Another thought is to follow the pandemic healthcare route --- you know wastewater testing can track the level of virus outbreak.  Another thought is to follow the cyber threat to potable water --- Public Works Departments and Utilities.  Connect with MEGA CITY 2070 if you wish to follow sustainability.  It is your choice!!  More importantly, have fun going down this pathway and keep an open mind to relocation.

    All the best,

    Babatunde:

I applaud your continued interest to be a student; however, soon you will need to break away.  Two Routes:  Entry-Level Structural Engineer or Professorship.  This can be a difficult decision; however, your resume clearly shows the struggle between which route to pursue.  It is NOT realistic to follow both routes simultaneously as a young engineer.  Recommend that you register for the E.I.T. Examination.  Also, recommend following more "current" tools such as BIM-3D and Office 365.  Other improvements to your resume could include expanding to three pages or four pages whereby skill sets are expressed in greater detail (particularly if you seek a government job).  Remember that Biden handed the Government $1.7 Trillion in support of the Infrastructure Jobs Act.  Also, please list whether you are willing to relocate.

    All the best,

    David

    Hi David,
Thank you so much for the constructive insights to my resume. I am trying to transition from an educator to a civil structural engineer for the past two years because of my interest in the profession and that was why I enrolled for the classes for my graduate studies. However, I have been having challenges getting an internship/entry level opportunities for more than a year now. Many applications has been sent out with only few interviews. So I found it challenging to include engineering work experiences in my resume. Like you indicated that my resume should go three to four pages, I'm not sure how this can be established with my limited time study for my classes and working and equally most resumes I have seen in this profession are usually one to two pages long. However, I planned to sit for the FE exam in September. Thank you for your understanding and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Ryan:

Good Start; however, a few missing elements to expand upon --> Do you have any achievement awards?  Do you have any publications?  Do you have an E.I.T?  I noted the double major (Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering); however, the reviewer needs to understand your specialty (structural or sustainability or transportation or other).  Recommend an Objective Statement such as "Seek a government position to leverage and support the Infrastructure Jobs Act."  After all, Biden tossed the government $1.7 Trillion to roll out various civil engineering projects.  Otherwise, you have selected a great pathway and are well prepared.

Rock Solid Resume!!  Form and Style are terrific.  If you are seeking a government position, then you will need to demonstrate your construction management understanding of CMa, CMc, CMr, design-build, design-bridge-build and so forth).  Question -- Are you a member of CMAA?  Are you seeking a PMP?  I am certainly familiar with those companies listed on the resume.  Follow the Infrastructure Jobs Act if you wish.  You would definitely fit in well at my organization (and we hire from time to time on USA Jobs)!!  Please remember to number the pages (especially going to three pages or four pages if you wish to expand upon your expert knowledge, expert skills and expert abilities)!!!!!

I have been following your threads for about a year now and I wanted to read up on your talent.  Appears that you are going after the energy field / sustainability field.  Two very "hot" areas of work activity!!  Keep up the student chapter activities!!  One hint is to NOT post links within the resume.  My viewpoint.  Industry is mixed upon a viewpoint.  It is your call.  Be well and keep in touch!!

    Hello David,

Thank you for reviewing my resume and for following my threads!

I have removed the link from the bottom of my resume, but I was also wondering how okay it was that I was explaining some of my experience and projects without bullet points. Did that seem alright given companies using ATS to sort through resumes?

As an engineer, one common thought is to learn (digest) the equation before solving the problem.  I never knew the true meaning of F = MA; and, probably will continue to search for truth / understanding.  My advise to you (my friend) is to empower yourself with confidence and dismiss your search for an algorithm.  You will never find the answer.  There is no magic to writing a resume.  Learn and Practice...Practice and Learn.  Continuous "lifetime" learning is key for me and hopefully for you too.  I believe that your resume is terrific and your skills will open many doors of opportunity if you are willing to accept them.

I followed your thread from this morning and I wanted to offer a few more tidbits on your resume (and application).  Please utilize a larger font with your full name at the top of your resume.  Please dismiss the heading entitled "KEYWORDS" and replace with PROFESSIONAL SKILLS.  Expand upon Civil Engineering (IE What fields?  Transportation?  Other?).  Expand upon Analytics (IE Regression Analysis?).  Expand upon Environmental (IE What models have you worked on such as "time and delay, navigation"?).  Expand upon Documentation (IE Accounting?  Meta Data Mapping?  Record Management?).  Expand upon Project Management (IE Beyond Traditional such as Risk Management?).  Expand upon Statistics (IE Alpha Testing and Beta Testing and Pilot Testing with the specific success rates).  ADD Soft Skills such as flexibility in multi-cultural settings.  Utilize "RELEVANT" PROJECTS in lieu of PROJECTS.  Utilize "RELEVANT" TECHNOLOGY / COMPUTER SKILLS.  Please quantify "dozens" (IE 100, 200 or other).  Please provide three specific examples of your "discussion chats" in lieu of an umbrella (look and find) approach.  Finally, target the job announcement and state what you are seeking as an objective (just under you name) in lieu of a "catch all / catch everything" approach.  That said, repeat some (limit to the top four) of the matching skill set "buzz" words from their announcement within your resume.  Remember to practice the "interview" REF ASCE Helpful Tips and follow up with the prospective employer.  Wishing you much success!!  Let me know as to how you are doing.

Thank you very much for your outlined description of what remains to be fixed on my resume. I have been on and off about improving all my resumes for years and was sure there was always another way to improve the ways recruiters and ATS would look at it, especially with all of the top statements.

    Good Afternoon:

Five Stars for the notation of "VOLUNTEER" activities!!  So, you are tracking a career in "groundwater."  We need more people like yourself in this area of expertise.  I applaud seeking an internship this summer and I do hope that you connect with a choice employer.  Your resume (as written) will open many doors of opportunity.  Remember to write a daily journal and to keep your resume current / updated as your career unfolds.  Benchmark your growth and look back on your early days and have fun along the pathway forward.

I know this is a late reply but I was really busy with the interviews and the exams right after this thread.
I'm interested in water quality because I want to volunteer for Engineers Without Borders. It's a bit early for me to say where exactly I would focus in my career but the concept of Sustainable Design of modern cities really excites me.
I really liked your advice about keeping a track of every big and small accomplishment. Internship hunting has really made me depressed in the past but when I look at the accomplishments I have made (ironically while applying for a position), it really boosts m spirits to keep going.

Also thank you so much for looking at my resume, I'm proud to announce that I was able to get not one but two offers for the summer!

    Hi Anum,

Excellent work on your resume! It is clear and easy to read and understand, and it provides great information about your experiences and qualifications.

My first comment, right off the bat, is that your resume should be one page. Sometimes mid-to-late career resumes can justifiably spread to two pages, but your resume content as a student and in the future as an early-career professional should be concise enough to fit on one. As it is, your resume has quite a bit of white space between lines and sections. If you reduce that white space and make your margins narrower (within reason), you shouldn't have too much trouble fitting your content onto one page.

I added some additional comments on the content of your resume in the attached PDF. Best of luck!

    Thanks,
    Katie

    Hi Anum,

One additional comment that I missed the first time around. Please make sure that the email address you list on your resume is one that you will have continued access to. Since you are transferring from your community college, you may want to look into whether you will retain that email address going forward. If you will lose access, list a personal email address instead where employers can contact you.

    Thanks,
    Katie

    Daniel:

Emphasis of past accomplishments is appropriate; however, I recommend to expand upon the last three years of achievement.  That said, list dollar value and timeline of your activities.  Additionally, list the stakeholders.  NOT certain on the logo's -- I thought these logo's could have been Quick Reference (QR) links.  If so, then be aware of the application limit.  Industry has specific guidance on this aspect.  A few employers will dismiss the applicant for "exceeding" the limit.  Your skills are terrific and many doors of opportunity exist for you.

    Hi Daniel,

Your resume has a lot of excellent information. You are at a point in your career where you can maybe justify a two-page resume, but with some strategic formatting I am confident you can still fit it onto one page, which is preferable. I have left a lot of suggestions on different opportunities where you can save space; feel free to play around with them as needed. There are a few other comments regarding the content of your resume as well. Best of luck!

    Hello.
    PFA my resume for review.
I am an international graduate student at University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign,(UIUC), currently pursuing my MS in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering)
I am on the lookout for structural engineering internship opportunities for the upcoming Summer 2022.

I started my MS (August 2021 - December 2022) right after I completed my undergraduate (May 2021). I do not have any employment experience but I do have some internship experiences and projects.

I am also a student member of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of the ASCE.

Hi Giri Subbu Rathinam Arun Kumar,

Your resume was already in very good shape, well organized, and easy to navigate

Some minor things you could do to improve it further:

    • For Academic Courses, since you are already on a 2nd line, are there any other relevant courses you can add here?
    • For your Software Experience, I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. AutoCAD 2018)
    • For both relevant experience and project highlights, I would love to see more quantitative information! Like changing " Performed site-check for concrete slab design" to "Performed site-check for 10 different concrete slab designs within a 10 story residential building." Adding more quantitative information helps the reader get a better understanding of your scope of experience. I did love how you included the relevant computer programs and
    • For extracurricular activities, again showing numbers really helps - For "Social Media Head" - how many junior members did you supervise? How many social media accounts were you managing? How often were you posting?
    • I notice that your file is named "Resume 2022-03-17". In the future, I would recommend including part or your full name in the filename. It helps hiring folks to find yours easily on their computer (or in my case from the rest of the resumes I am reviewing on my desktop).

Good job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Sosan Oria,

Overall your resume looks great! It might be because this was submitted as Word Documents as opposed to a PDF, but when I opened your resume, there are two lines that are on the second page.

Some minor things you could do to improve it further:

    • Remove the periods throughout the end of your bullet points as some currently have it and some don't.
    • For your Software Experience, I would also add the latest version you are familiar with (i. e. AutoCAD 2018). You included this for some, but not all.
    • I believe you have a typo: NSCEES should be NCEES as that is who administers the FE Exam.
    • For work, I would love to see more quantitative information! For example what size are these management facilities you are designing? How many miles did you permit maps that you managed cover (an estimate is okay)
    • For your dates throughout "–" sometimes have space after and sometimes doesn't. I would make sure that this is consistent throughout

Good job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Ismaila Olaniyi,

Your resume was already in great shape, well organized, and easy to navigate!

Some minor things you could do to improve it further:

    • I love seeing the custom LinkedIn URL. I would update the formatting so that the underline also covers "http://"
    • For both Experience and Academic projects, I would love to see more quantitative information! Like changing "Conducting Lab and field trainings for undergraduate students assigned to my weekly sessions" to "Conducting 3 weekly Lab and field trainings for up to 80 undergraduate students"
    • For technical skills and certifications, I would remove the periods at the ends of your lists like for the Programming Skills.
    • For professional memberships – this is great, but does take up a lot of space. It would be beneficial to use this space to show me what leadership and soft skills you have gained through these experiences. Have you taken on a leadership role with your local ASCE student chapter? Have you joined one of their many technical competitions?
    • Similar with Honors and Awards – Can you tell me more about the Oyo Caucus Prize – were their 5 teams in the running or 500 teams? What was the deliverable that was graded and ultimately award best in surveying?

Good job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Biji Sara Binu,

Good content overall! I would recommend you reading this article about the difference between a CV and a resume before reading my comments below: https://collaborate.asce.org/careerbydesign/blogs/doug-cantrell1/2021/03/08/resume-or-cv-whats-the-difference-which-to-use.

Here are a few suggestions on ways to further improve this as a resume:

    • I more often see a one or two resume, but if you choose to go the three-page resume route, I would highly recommend that you add a header to all pages with your full name.
    • To get this down to one page resume, I would recommend removing the following sections: Personal details, Certificates, and Hobbies. I would also recommend decreasing the line space between lines, especially in the achievement section.
    • For education, I would remove high school to also save space. I would also expand on your higher education by including your anticipated graduation date.
    • For the skills section, I would remove the soft skills like "time management" and "leadership" and add a section like Leadership Experience. Are you involved in any organizations like ASCE where you can show me these skills? For example, I was the president of my ASCE Student Chapter and lead a team 10 officers to host 50 events annually (this is how I showed both of those soft skills through my experience). These skills can also be demonstrated through academic projects!
    • For Experience, I would love to see more quantitative information! Like changing "Managing emails and database" to "Managing up 50 daily emails and 10 databases with 500+ entries each"
    • I notice that your file is named "Resume". In the future, I would recommend including part or your full name in the filename. It helps hiring folks to find yours easily on their computer (or in my case from the rest of the resumes I am reviewing on my desktop).

Good job, and I hope this helps!

    Talia:

Your resume caught my eye!!  I like the format and style!!  Perhaps the "$300M Capital Improvement Program" was most interesting?!  Perhaps working in "multi-sectors" was most interesting?  Perhaps the "unique method" of broadcasting your software skills was most interesting?!  Actually, my Academic Advisor (from several years ago) graduated from McGill University and he recommended that I read your resume.  However; I was disheartened to read "references will be made available upon request."  That actually is considered "old school" thinking and I knew that the resume was rushed at this point.  For Example -- Difficulty in bringing projects to a closure.  Difficulty in following-through.  Difficulty in staying connected.  What I mean to say is the resume needs to be "end-to-end" robust and solid.  Better to list three professional references (which I am certain that you already have) and close with a hard hitting feature!!  After all, look at your terrific skills.  Additionally, list any publications (even an editorial in a local newspaper or letter to the editor of ASCE).  If you are willing to shift gears, then please apply for the Infrastructure Jobs Act Program at $1.7B.  There are a boat load of positions around the Canadian Border.  Be well and keep in touch.

    All the best,

    Shaquille:

Good beginning to a wonderful career!!  I noticed (perhaps?) an error in the work history.  Wolmer's Trust is listed from January 2020 to Present.  Chin Engineering is listed July 2021.  This implies an overlap of two jobs in July...correct??  Please omit ALL acronyms such as SIP and UAV.  You can do better expressing your "engineer internship" talent by adding greater detail such as type, quantities and volume (expand upon engineers, clients and dollar value).  WoW you are interested in PMI.  However; you have NOT gone after the E.I.T. (and you were an engineer intern).  Additionally, I observe talent with robotics and encourage you to track Artificial Intelligence and Simulation Modeling.  Perhaps with a mix of Building Information Modeling?!  Just a few thoughts.  Be well and keep in touch.

    All the best,

    Hello,

I marked up your document with the information you could use to create a resume.  I would suggest you try to fit it on one page and keep the document simple and clean.  As far as the original application it has a lot of good information and I don't have any recommendations for change, try to keep personal information and photographs off the resume, but it is okay on this special application.

I included a marked up copy for your information.

    Good Luck,

    Yaman:

Certainly have all the ingredients for an outstanding career!!  Where will you pivot next?  Industry will acknowledge the "hot" links in your resume with various result.  Typically, there is a maximum limit placed upon an application.  Bringing a portfolio to the interview does NOT share your soft skills and could result in a distraction unless the announcement specifies one as a requirement (IE Architect).  Typically, knowledge and skills and abilities (in government applications) are delineated directly on the resume if you are seeking a position on the $1.7Million Infrastructure Jobs Act Program.  Recommend that you target your skills to a specific job announcement in lieu of a waterfall approach.  For Example:  What field of Civil Engineering (Innovation / Robotics) are you tracking?  What registrations (P.E.)  are you tracking?  I like the fact that all of your activities are team-based and  please leverage this skill set as much as possible.  Listing a random series of software could backfire if you cannot demonstrate how you have applied your skills and how you wish to expand your skills.  One missing element is that you seem to lack (or at least not mention) cost estimating knowledge.  Estimating is a very key feature to add.  Are you willing to relocate?  Additionally, list three professional references and do not fear going to three pages on your resume.  Be well and enjoy your career!!  Perhaps we will cross pathways at a future robotics conference?!  Keep in touch and let me know how you are doing!!

    All the best,

    David

    Professor:

Wow!!  Nice Career!!  Please enumerate upon your professorship pathway.  For Example -- Talk about the specific fields of engineering that you taught.  Please enumerate upon publications.  For Example -- List the "most current four" or list four "select" publications.  What Institute are you seeking to transition???  I assume that your portfolio will be coupled with your resume.  Correct??  Perhaps (??) I will link up to one of your "on line" conferences?!  I will try to follow your publications going forward.

    Good Afternoon:

One "Major" Observation -- Please transition (and reformat) to a PDF (view only) resume.  If applying for several positions, then remember to start with the "baseline resume" and to target the specific announcement.  Do NOT rapid fire the resumes out!!  This really shows as I read your resume (and be easily corrected).  Have fun and keep knocking on the door.  Your future is very bright.

    All the best,

    Hellow Genesaret,

Excellent resume!  I only have a couple of comments.  It looks like the section break line should be under Summary instead of above it based on how you have formatted the other sections.  Also, the only other item I see is making sure your dates line up for your work experience between each position.

You have done a great job and have an impressive resume.

I wish you all the best in your future job prospects!

    Good Day:

NOT certain of the time zone and whether you are at home or other due to the pandemic.  However; your resume is clean and crisp (exceptional features).  If you are able, then please add a little more descriptive wording to your achievements such as dollar value and your specific positive impact upon the activity.  I noted that you follow chess matches so you must be an expert in strategic thinking (a strong skill set to include on the resume).  Who do you think is (was) the best chess player on a global basis???  Perhaps (??) I will join you at one of the chess tournaments (white or black -- your choice).  Your career is bright and please enjoy!!
