With most schools announcing that they will be closed for the remainder of the academic year, ASCE sections, branches, and student chapters are looking for ways to virtually connect with schools.

What we are doing as part of ASCE Philadelphia YMF is creating a #AskAnEngineer initiative. We have emailed our local STEM connections to ask if they or their students have any questions and will be compiling questions until the end of the month. Then in May, the YMF Board and I plan to record answers to the questions submitted and then stitch them together for a YouTube video. We have received a handful of questions so far and hope to receive many more by the end of the month.

Also if you haven't seen already, ASCE's Pre-College Outreach Team has put together some amazing resources including a whole new series titled "STEM @ Home " on the following page: https://www.asce.org/pre-college_outreach/

What are you doing for pre-college STEM outreach during this unprecedented time?

Excited to read about what you are doing locally!

I have not personally done much on this topic but I have seen a few people have virtual calls with students to guide them through these tough times. I think the ASCE initiative is great and will hopefully get a lot of students involved. Personally, I am planning to look up a cool structures experiment I can do at home to record and share. I think sharing interesting topics on our field with getting students motivated and they may even try them.

    Hi Luis--

Please keep me posted if you create a structures experiment to do at home. The activities developed for Dream Big: Engineering Our World may give you a starting point. We just released home-based versions of Windy City Tower and Build an Earthquake Resistant Structure. You can find the collection at http://discovere.org/dreambig.

If you, or any of our ASCE members, does create an online video please send me the link. We may be able to add it to our library.
