    Hello ASCE Collaborate,

Being only a few years out of school I have taken part in a few onboarding procedures whether it be for an internship or a job.

I wanted to start a thread to discuss some common and uncommon onboarding procedures so managers and employees can reflect on what practices are productive versus some those that are not.

    Employees
Please share some onboarding practices that you find most helpful (and which do you find contrary)?

    Managers
What are some effective and efficient onboarding practices from a managerial perspective?

    Always willing to learn,

Thanks Daniel for opening this thread!
I like the onboarding process at our firm that help new hires hit the ground running right away :
    • Have a clear working plan (what projects will be working on, who to talk to, etc) and be readily available whenever questions arise.
    • Apart from assigning a supervisor, we also have a buddy system which we pair new hires with one employee to be their day-to-day helper which works great especially in the first few months.
    • Get them involved in office day-to-day activities such as happy hour, coffee break, employee networks' activities (Career network, LGBT's, Hispanic's, women's, etc) to build rapport.
    • Encourage them to join the monthly Community of Practice conference calls (many topics available) to know what cool stuffs other colleagues are doing in many offices around the world. New hires will get a chance to introduce themselves that might open up future collaboration too.

    Hi Daniel.
Within the first 6 weeks of any new person to your org.,
have at least 5 different women and men in functions this new-to-the-firm
person will interface with, go-to breakfast, lunch, or dinner . . .with only them . . . to learn an overview of common interface challenges they have faced.

At the end of this mini-tutorial on real life, ask the new hire to suggest what and how the situations might be addressed without fear.

    Stay Healthy!

    Cheers,

    Bill
