  • 1.  Anyone using the Envision system on water resources & environmental projects?

    Posted 04-22-2016 02:42 PM

Hi everyone! Have any of you used the Envision rating system in planning and designing any of your projects? The only projects we hear about are the projects that people have rated through ISI, but I have been told a lot of folks are using it as a guide for planning and designing sustainable infrastructure projects. Have you done this?  I'd really appreciate hearing from others who are thinking of or have used it for helping  plan and design projects.

Hi Karen. Kansas City, Missouri, requires it to be used on many of their projects.  There are several professionals here that have finished their certification because of this requirement. We are fortunate to have an Envision Trainer in the metro.  This certification is on my list.

We are using Envision on wet infrastructure projects with our clients.  None have opted to go through the certification process.  It is generally off the books and not being publicized outside of the community relations process.

A few of the larger agencies we work with (nationally) have started to adopt Envision into their standard contract terms for engineering consultants.

Can anyone please explain me what Envision system is? I am a civil engineering final year student of Orissa Engineering College, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. I want to know it because I have to make a seminar report on any new innovative thing, and this sounds pretty good for my seminar report. Please help me.

Envision is a rating system designed to measure the sustainability of infrastructure projects across several categories (Quality of Life, Leadership, Resource Allocation, Natural World, and Climate and Risk).

It was created a few years ago through the collaboration of industry, academia, and ASCE.  It is now managed by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (which also evolved from partnerships between government, industry, and ASCE in the USA.)

It is intended to be a counterpart to green building rating systems, most notably USGBC's LEED.  Envision can be applied more broadly - i.e., beyond specific types of buildings.  In my limited experience with both systems, I note that Envision seems to have more emphasis on project selection and community involvement.

I obtained the ENV SP credential to keep current on sustainability initiatives.  I have not used it in my career.  However, when I was in the national capital area, a wastewater treatment facility achieved Envision platinum:  https://sustainableinfrastructure.org/envision/project-awards/nutrient-management-facility/

If you have not seen ISI's website, that would be your best resource for further study:

    Dear Colleagues,
Please allow me to suggest a somewhat different perspective that includes all comments to date, and goes beyond them.

The end-point objective, as I understand it, is the systemic care and feeding of our nation's infrastructure, including and going beyond our water, bridge, and highway systems.

Recently I came across a new way of thinking about a cross-discipline/cross-marketplace partnership to accomplish that very objective.

It has been posted in the "ASCE Collaborate" family of topics as "Improving Infrastructure."

Please consider reading and evaluating its utility.

Thank you for reading and considering my thoughts.

    Cheers.
